Thirty members of the Washington<br />
Ballet performed classic and contemporary<br />
ballet pieces as choreographed<br />
by George Balanchine. A total of 4,303<br />
persons attended the three performances.<br />

and other pieces, by the London<br />
Contemporary Dance Theatre, at the<br />
National Theatre, September 8-9<br />
Twenty-five dancers performed Forest<br />
and Class in addition to the above two<br />
dances choreographed by Robert<br />
Cohan. A total of 4,477 persons<br />
attended the three performances.<br />
• The Lovers of the Sun and Bolero by<br />
Hungary's Ballet Company of Gyor, at<br />
Munye Theatre, September 17-18<br />
Ivan Marko choreographed modern<br />
dance pieces to The Lovers of the Sun<br />
composed by Carl Orff and Bolero by<br />
Maurice Ravel. Thirty-seven dancers<br />
presented three performances,<br />
which were attended by a total of 2,549<br />
persons.<br />
• Swan Lake and other pieces, by the<br />
Bolshoi Ballet with leading dancers<br />
from other Soviet ballet companies, at<br />
the Sejong Cultural Center,<br />
September 3-5<br />
<strong>Part</strong>icipation of Soviet ballet dancers,<br />
mainly comprising members of the<br />
Bolshoi Ballet, in the Seoul Olympic<br />
Arts Festival was not confirmed until<br />
after the schedule of the Seoul International<br />
Dance Festival had been<br />
determined. In Korea they performed<br />
excerpts from Swan Lake and The<br />
Sleeping Beauty choreographed by<br />
Yuri Parkov. Fifty-one dancers,<br />
including Swetlana Choi, a thirdgeneration<br />
Korean-Soviet citizen,<br />
presented three performances for<br />
audiences totalling 18,904.<br />
The Seoul International<br />
Theatre Festival<br />
Thirteen Korean and six foreign<br />
theatrical troupes took part in the<br />
Seoul International Theatre Festival<br />
held at the National Theatre, the<br />
Munye Theater, the Sejong Cultural<br />
Center, the Munhwa Gymnasium and<br />
the Hyundai To Art Hall, between<br />
August 16 and October 2. The steering<br />
committee of the festival was responsible<br />
for selecting the Korean and<br />
foreign groups to be invited to participate.<br />
The 13 Korean dramas presented during<br />
the festival included five works<br />
which already had attained artistic and<br />
commercial success, four new works<br />
specially commissioned to celebrate<br />
the Seoul Olympics, and four Korean<br />
classics reinterpreted with modern<br />
perspectives and adapted in new<br />
styles.<br />
One theatrical group each from Brazil,<br />
Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Japan<br />
and Poland were invited to join the<br />
festival. The festival included 157 performances<br />
by a total of 639 actors and<br />
actresses. Audiences totalled 124,726<br />
persons, filling 83 percent of the<br />
combined seating capacity.<br />
Korean groups<br />
• Anyang Art Theatre<br />
Pakkoji, at the Munye Theater, August<br />
19-20<br />
Lee Kang-jin, So l-sook and 31 others<br />
took part in this drama written by Lee<br />
Chae-hyon and directed by Lee Chaein.<br />
The three performances were<br />
attended by a total of 1,543 spectators.<br />
• Theatre Cecil<br />
Bulga Bulga, at the Munye Theater,<br />
August 22-26<br />
Chae Yun-il directed this drama written<br />
by Lee Hyon-hwa. The cast included<br />
Shin Ku, Lee Ho-jae, Kim Tong-su and<br />
16 others. A total of 4,540 persons<br />
attended the 10 performances.<br />
• Theatre Group Freedom<br />
Blood Wedding at the Munye Theater,<br />
August 27-September 5<br />
A total of 4,644 persons attended the<br />
performances of the drama, which was<br />
written by Garcia Lorca, and adapted<br />
and directed by Kim Jeong-ok. Park<br />
Chong-ja, Kim Kum-ji and Park Ung<br />
and 15 others appeared in the drama.<br />
