In solo competition the first through<br />

eighth placers, as determined by total<br />

scores earned in figures and free routines,<br />

were qualified to compete in the<br />

final. In duets, the first through eighth<br />

finishers as determined by the sum of<br />

average scores in figures and free<br />

routines were qualified to compete in<br />

the final.<br />

The competitions were supervised by<br />

the FINA president, secretary-general<br />

and four technical delegates. A total of<br />

180 technical officials were commissioned<br />

to manage the competitions;<br />

among them were 33 local officials.<br />

Kristin Otto of the German Democratic<br />

Republic captured six golds in<br />

women's 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter<br />

freestyle, 100-meter backstroke, 100meter<br />

butterfly, 4x100-meter relay, and<br />

4x100-meter medley relay. Matt Biondi<br />

of the United States brought home five<br />

golds in men's 50-meter freestyle, 100meter<br />

freestyle, 4x100-meter medley<br />

relay, 4x100-meter freestyle relay and<br />

4x200-meter freestyle relay. Janet<br />

Evans of the United States won three<br />

gold medals-in 400-meter freestyle,<br />

800-meter freestyle and 400-meter<br />

Hungary's Tamas Darnyi, and the<br />

German Democratic Republic's<br />

Daniela Hunger and Silke Hoerner,<br />

emerged as double gold medalists in<br />

competitive swimming. Greg Louganis<br />

of the U.S. won two gold medals in<br />

diving. In synchronized swimming,<br />

Canada captured both the solo and<br />

duet golds.<br />

Powered by female competitors, the<br />

German Democratic Republic finished<br />

first in the medals race, with 11 golds,<br />

eight silvers, and nine bronzes,<br />

followed by the United States, with<br />

10 golds, 10 silvers and six bronzes.<br />

The third place went to Hungary which<br />

won four golds, and two silvers.<br />

Despite the head injury he sustained<br />

while leaping from the springboard,<br />

the Los Angeles double gold medalist<br />

Louganis still managed to capture two<br />

golds again. In men's 100m butterfly,<br />

unheralded Anthony Nesty of Surinam<br />

beat five-time gold medalist Matt<br />

Biondi to win the gold, becoming the<br />

first black medalist in Olympic swimming<br />
