• The Greek National Theatre<br />

Oedipus Rex, at the National Theatre,<br />

August 27-28<br />

Korean theater-goers had a rare<br />

opportunity to appreciate a classical<br />

Greek tragedy as Oedipus Rex, written<br />

by Sophocles, was staged with<br />

traditional dramatic techniques by the<br />

Greek National Theatre. A total of 3,017<br />

persons attended the performances<br />

directed by G. Michailidis. The cast<br />

included N. Tsakiroglou, T.H. Sinotis,<br />

K. Voulalas and 40 others.<br />

• Comédie Française (France)<br />

Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, at the<br />

Sejong Cultural Center, September 1-2<br />

Since its premiere before Louis XIV in<br />

1670, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme has<br />

been staged by the Comédie Française<br />

as many as 1,304 times. Under<br />

the direction of Jean-Luc Boutte,<br />

Michel Etcheveny, Alain Pralon,<br />

Roland Bertin and 39 other actors and<br />

actresses appeared in this classic<br />

comedy written by Moliere. A total<br />

of 5,692 spectators attended the<br />

performances.<br />

• Grand Kabuki Troupe (Japan)<br />

Kanadehon Chushingura, at the<br />

National Theatre, September 3-6<br />

Performances of Kanadehon<br />

Chushingura, one of the three most<br />

popular kabuki repertories, and<br />

Migawari Zazen, featuring Baiko Onoe,<br />

and Uzaemon Ichimura in leading<br />

roles, attracted a total of 7,676 spectators.<br />

The Grand Kabuki Troupe was<br />

the first Japanese kabuki group to visit<br />

Korea since the end of World War II.<br />

Music festivals<br />

The music festivals were remarkably<br />

broad in scope and rich in kinds.<br />

Festivals of Western music included<br />

classical and popular music. The<br />

annual Korean Music Festival was<br />

expanded into the Seoul International<br />

Music Festival. Also held in celebration<br />

of the Seoul Olympics were the<br />

Korean Classical Music Festival, the<br />

International Choral Festival and an<br />

Olympic Commemorative Concert.<br />

As many as 2,790 musicians from<br />

around the world performed in 40 concerts<br />

attended by a total of 91,699<br />

music lovers, who filled 84 percent of<br />
