The torch, which left Taegu at 8:30
a.m. on September 3, was passed to a
Kyongsangbuk-do runner at the
entrance of Hyosong Women's University
and headed toward the ancient
city of Kyongju via Yongchon. At
Kyongju, the torch was carried by
runners clad in ancient Hwarang and
Wonhwa costumes to the Kyongju Railroad
Station, and from there headed
toward Ulsan, while folk group dances,
mask parade and various folk plays
were unfolding in many parts of the
city.
At 8 p.m. the torch arrived at the
Pohang Gymnasium where the flame
was carried to a mobile flame bowl for
an overnight stop.
On September 4, a torch relay runner
left Pohang, heading for Kumi, and on
September 5, a runner left Kumi for
Taejon. Jogging over Chupungryong
ridge, and passing through Yongdong
and Okchon, the runners entered the
Seoul-Pusan Expressway. After a 15minute
run along the expressway, the
runners reached the Taejon interchange
where the torch was passed onto the
first Chungchongnam-do runner. At
Taejon plaza, the flame was put on the
mobile cauldron for an overnight stay.
At 9:30 a.m. on September 6, a runner
left Taejon, and the flame was carried
along Honam Expressway for an hour
and 25 minutes to reach Chongju city
in Chollabuk-do. In Chongju, the arrival
of the torch was celebrated with various
folk and cultural events including
Donghak Kabo Festival, the ssirum
wrestling match, and a farm music
band contest. In Pusan, the torch relay
was of a unique fashion involving a
mock pleasure boat and escorts clad
in oarsman's clothes.
As the runners traversed the vast
Mankyong paddy field to reach Kimje
city, monks from Kumsansa Temple
took over the torch, while in Chonju
where the flame made an overnight
stop, the torch was carried by wheelchaired
handicapped students from
Sonhwa School.
At 8 p.m. the torch reached the plaza
in front of Chollabuk-do provincial
government; the governor carried the
flame to a mobile cauldron. From there,
the torch was carried along the central
part of the Korean peninsula, from
Chonju to Kongju city on September 7,
from Kongju to Chongju city on
September 8, and from Chongju to
Chungju city on September 9. Departing
Chungju on September 10, the runners
raced northward as rain fell from
early morning. The 335-kilometer
course from Chungju to Kangnung
was a rugged route traversing Taebaek
ridge, the spinal cord of the Korean
peninsula; in the rainfall, the rugged
course was difficult for the torch relay
convoy of more than 30 vehicles.
In Chechon city, four disabled persons
relayed the torch on wheelchairs. In
Kangnung city, six male and six
female runners, clad in costumes
designed for the famous Yi Dynasty
scholar Yulgok and his mother Shin
Saimdang, relayed the torch.
