them. The Orientation Center took<br />

quick steps to solve inconveniences<br />

and problems.<br />

Banquets and Gifts<br />

Banquets<br />

As host, the SLOOC extended its welcome<br />

to the VIPs and Olympic Family<br />

by hosting various banquets. The<br />

banquets were divided into the official<br />

banquets for all the important members<br />

of the Olympic Family, and unofficial<br />

banquets for selected invitees.<br />

Banquets were held by various sponsoring<br />

agencies, while the SLOOC<br />

coordinated in advance the official<br />

banquets to avoid overlapping. The<br />

unofficial banquets by the SLOOC<br />

were coordinated by the Protocol<br />

Department.<br />

Kim Un-yong hosted 14 small-scale<br />

banquets for important persons from<br />

those countries with which Korea<br />

had no diplomatic ties. Receptions,<br />

dinners, luncheons and tea parties<br />

were held in support of the Games<br />

under the sponsorship of the Korean<br />

President, IOC president, Korean<br />

sports minister and the wife of the IOC<br />

president<br />

Presentation of gifts<br />

To augment the atmosphere of welcome,<br />

and to ensure that participation<br />

in the Games would-be a long-held<br />

memory, the SLOOC presented gifts<br />

symbolizing the Games to the Olympic<br />

Family.<br />

The official gifts for the Olympic<br />

Family were managed by the Protocol<br />

Department; the recipients of the gifts<br />

were classified by category, and the<br />

gifts were selected from among those<br />

which were developed by Olympic<br />

marketing firms.<br />

The volume of the gifts was based on<br />

the maximum projected number of the<br />

participants.<br />

Care was taken to keep the presentation<br />

of gifts to a reasonable level or so<br />

as to reduce possible budget waste.<br />

The gifts were divided into official gifts<br />

and special gifts; the official gifts<br />

included participation medal, official<br />

commemorative medal, participation<br />

diploma, bag, commemorative coin,<br />

cap, ball-point pens, badge. Hodori<br />

toy. The special gifts included camera,<br />

rain coat, silk cloth, desktop clock, and<br />

a wooden plaque of commemoration.<br />

Sightseeing and Functions for<br />

Spouses<br />

VIP tours ana functions Tor spouses<br />

were arranged for the purpose of<br />

introducing Korea's traditional culture<br />

and to help boost the public relations<br />

effect for Korea.<br />

The programs which were considered<br />

to be most typical of things Korean<br />

and the most popular were selected<br />

from among programs featured in past<br />

international events held in Korea.<br />

The SLOOC selected seven programs<br />

to suit the tight schedules of the Olympic<br />

Family, especially IOC members<br />

and other VIPs. Except for the tour of<br />

the truce village of Panmunjom, the<br />

programs were so arranged as to need<br />

only about half a day. The welcome<br />

luncheon and fashion shows, which -<br />

were especially popular during the<br />

Asian Games, were reshaped to<br />

present the best possible picture of<br />

Korean costumes and fashions.<br />

Those who wanted to participate in the<br />

VIP tours and function for spouses<br />

were required to apply for participation<br />

at the Headquarters Hotel and official<br />

hotels.<br />

spouses were as follow:<br />

Highlights: Traditional tea and beverage<br />

Special Note: <strong>Part</strong>icipants showed<br />

great interest in the traditional Korean<br />

culture and customs shown in a setting<br />

of a traditional Korean home and<br />

yard; they showed particular interest in<br />

the tea ceremony.<br />

• Welcoming luncheon and fashion<br />

show hosted by the wife of SLOOC<br />

president<br />
