displayed. A total of 17,794 persons<br />
visited the exhibition.<br />
• Special Exhibition of Ancient Korean<br />
Printing (Chongju National Museum,<br />
August 17-October 5)<br />
Seventy-two items including epitaphs,<br />
wooden and metal types, and printing<br />
instruments were displayed. Visitors<br />
totalled 16,753.<br />
• Special Exhibition of Kaya Pottery<br />
(Chinju National Museum, August<br />
17-October 5)<br />
A collection of 150 examples of the<br />
fine Kaya period (c. first to the sixth<br />
century) pottery were displayed. The<br />
exhibition drew a total of 19,997<br />
visitors.<br />
• Special Exhibition of Tigers in<br />
Korean Folk Art (National Folklore<br />
Museum, September 14-October 5)<br />
A total of 155 folk paintings and handicraft<br />
objects of tiger motif were displayed<br />
in relation to the Seoul Games' cub<br />
tiger mascot, Hodori. A total of 24,952<br />
persons visited the exhibition.<br />
• Seoul Citizens' Cultural Legacy<br />
Exhibition (Seoul Metropolitan Museum<br />
of Art, September 23-October 25)<br />
The theme of this annual exhibition for<br />
the Olympic year was "Old Seoul<br />
Viewed Through Painting." The exhibition<br />
included 634 maps and landscape<br />
paintings from the collections of private<br />
citizens and the organizations for cultural<br />
preservation, and drew 72,000<br />
visitors.<br />
Exhibitions of Korean culture<br />
• Exhibition of Korean Traditional<br />
Handicrafts (Sokchojon Hall in Toksu<br />
Palace, September 1-October 5)<br />
The exhibition featured the selected<br />
entries from the 1988 Korean Traditional<br />
Handicraft Exhibition, prize-winning<br />
works from the previous years' exhibitions,<br />
and works by the governmentrecognized<br />
master artists. The exhibits<br />
were of various categories such as<br />
metal, ceramic, stone, jade, wood,<br />
bamboo, lacquer, textile, paper, and<br />
dyeing, totalling 685. Master artists<br />
designated "living cultural treasures"<br />
in 15 fields demonstrated their skills<br />
during the exhibition. The total number<br />
of visitors reached 19,617.<br />
• East-West Contemporary Ceramics<br />
Exhibition (Arts Center of the Korean<br />
Culture and Arts <strong>Foundation</strong>, September<br />
9-October 9)<br />
The exhibition included 156 works by<br />
108 leading ceramic artists of France,<br />
the Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Korea,<br />
Spain, Sweden and the U.S. manifesting<br />
the current trends in ceramic art.<br />
Seven participating artists held a workshop<br />
at the Pugok Kiln in Yangju-gun<br />
County, Kyonggi-do Province, from<br />
September 10 through 12. The workshop<br />
included demonstration sessions.<br />
A total of 9,957 persons visited<br />
the exhibition.<br />
• International Calligraphy Exhibition<br />
(Seoul Arts Center Calligraphy Hall,<br />
September 12-November 12)<br />
A total of 158 calligraphers from four<br />
Asian countries — 10 from Hong Kong,<br />

30 from Japan, 30 from Chinese Taipei<br />
and 88 from Korea — participated in<br />
the exhibition. The Japanese calligraphers<br />
were invited with recommendation<br />
from Japan's National<br />
Union of Calligraphers, the Calligraphers<br />
Association of Hong Kong<br />
nominated the Hong Kong invitees,<br />
and those from Chinese Taipei were<br />
recommended by the National Palace<br />
Museum in Taipei. The exhibition had<br />
a total of 7,160 visitors.<br />
• 5000 Years of Korean Culinary Art<br />
(Former Seoul High School grounds,<br />
September 15-October 15)<br />
The exhibition was intended to show<br />
all about Korean dietary life of past<br />
and present. The mine display rooms<br />
were dedicated to the history of<br />
Korean food; kitchen and tableware<br />
including spoons and chopsticks, dining<br />
tables, and cooking instruments;<br />
foods for ceremonies including<br />
wedding, funeral, ancestral rites and<br />
the coning-of-age rite; fermented foods<br />
including Kimchi vegetables pickled<br />
and seasoned with various ingredients<br />
and methods of their preparation; 80<br />
different kinds of rice cake (ttok) and<br />
30 different confectionary items; various<br />
seasonal dishes and distinctive<br />
regional dishes; religious foods; teas<br />
and teaware; and video presentations.<br />
A total of 34,522 persons visited the<br />
exhibition.<br />
• Exhibition of Korean Traditional Folk<br />
Crafts (Former Seoul High School<br />
