The one hundred-kilometer team road<br />
race marked the start of the cycling<br />
competition on September 18, and,<br />
after taking one day off on September<br />
19, six track events were staged for five<br />
days, from September 20 to 24. After<br />
taking one day off on September 25,<br />
the 82-kilometer individual road race<br />
for women was held on September 26,<br />
and the 196.8-kilometer individual road<br />
race final was held on September 27,<br />
concluding the cycling competition.<br />
Two world records were established in<br />
the 4,000-meter team pursuit preliminary<br />
for men on September 23; in the<br />
preliminary which started at 5 p.m.,<br />
the U.S.S.R. team finished first with a<br />
world record time of 4:16.10, and the<br />
Australian team came in second with<br />
4:16.32, bettering the previous record<br />
of 4:17.71 established in 1986 by the<br />
Czechoslovakian team.<br />
In the 196.8-kilometer individual road<br />
race for men, an event usually called a<br />
cycling marathon, Olaf Ludwig of the<br />
German Democratic Republic clocked<br />
in 4:32:22 to capture the gold, and<br />
Bernd Groene of the Federal Republic<br />
of Germany took home the silver, while<br />
compatriot Christian Henn brought<br />
home the bronze.<br />
In the sprint for women, a new event<br />
added to the Seoul Olympic schedule,<br />
Erika Saloumitae of the<br />
U.S.S.R. captured the gold.<br />
In the medal race, the U.S.S.R.<br />
finished first, with four golds, one<br />
silver, and two bronze; the German<br />
Democratic Republic placed second,<br />
with three golds, two silvers and one<br />
bronze; the Netherlands placed third,<br />
with one gold and one silver; and<br />
Denmar followed, with one gold.<br />
