• 2000 Years of Korean Costume<br />

(Korea Exhibition Cener, September<br />

5-October 2)<br />

A total of 129 Korean historical<br />

costumes, including 26 items of the<br />

Three Kingdoms period (57 B.C.-A.D.<br />

668), 13 of the Unified Shilla period<br />

(668-935), eight of the Koryo period<br />

(918-1392), and 81 of the Choson<br />

period (1392-1910), all replicas produced<br />

in collaboration with historical<br />

costume specialists, were displayed<br />

on mannequins. Personal ornaments<br />

were included and antique furniture<br />

pieces were arranged so as to provide<br />

historical settings. From the Three<br />

Kingdoms and Unified Shilla periods,<br />

costumes of the kings, queens,<br />

princes and princesses were<br />

exhibited. From the Koryo and Choson<br />

periods, however, costumes of the<br />

commoners such as the celadon potters,<br />

printers of the the Tripitaka Koreana,<br />

and farmers were presented together<br />

with the costumes of high-ranking<br />

officials and generals.<br />

The costumes on display were verified<br />

against historical records, paintings<br />

and tomb murals by Yu Hi-kyong, an<br />

expert on Oriental costumes, Prof. Kim<br />

Mi-ja of Seoul Women's University and<br />

Prof. Lee Kyong-ja of Ewha Womans<br />

University.<br />

• Exhibition of Korean Traditional<br />

Embroidery and Ornamental Knots<br />

(Korea Exhibition Center, September<br />

6-October 2)<br />

The exhibition featured 146 works of<br />

traditional embroidery and 260 works<br />

of ornamental knots. During the exhibition,<br />

traditional Korean wedding<br />

ceremony was enacted for an hour<br />

from 2 p.m. every day to show how<br />

embroideries and ornamental knots<br />

were used on ceremonial occasions.<br />

• Arts and Science in Sports (National<br />

Museum of Korea, September<br />

15-October 30)<br />

Seventy-four ancient sports-related<br />

objects unearthed across the Italian<br />

peninsula, including statues, reliefs,<br />

an arm of a discus thrower, parts of<br />

chariots, the head of a boxer,<br />

a Hercules' torso, and a gladiator's<br />

helmet, were displayed in the exhibition<br />

jointly organized by the National<br />

Museum of Korea in Seoul and the<br />

National Council of Research (C.N.R.)<br />

of Italy. The exhibits, dating from the<br />

ninth to the third century B.C., were<br />

lent by leading Italian museums. The<br />

Italian government bore the expenses<br />

of the exhibition. Although it was not<br />

listed as an official Olympic Arts<br />

Festival event because the agreement<br />

with the Italian government was<br />

reached after the festival programs<br />

had been finalized, the exhibition was<br />

as important as any event on the<br />

official program.<br />

• Greece-Sports and Culture (Korea<br />

Exhibition Center, September 1 -<br />

October 5)<br />

The exhibition, organized by the Greek<br />

Ministry of Culture, included 150<br />

replicas and photographs of sculptures,<br />

reliefs, pottery and murals showing the<br />

sports of the ancient Olympics.<br />

• Exhibition of Art Posters of the Seoul<br />

Olympics (Lloyd Shin Gallery, August<br />

25-October 1)<br />

Art posters expressing the Seoul<br />

Games ideals of peace, harmony and<br />

progress, designed by 25 famous<br />

artists designated by the IOC, were<br />

displayed. Exhibitions of prints were<br />

held simultaneously in 18 cities<br />

including Seoul, New York and Los<br />

Angeles, and the prints and now in the<br />

collections of museums in 168 countries.<br />

Five Korean painters were included.<br />

They were: Kim Ki-cHkng, Kim Chang-yol,<br />

Nam Kwan, Park Seo-bo and Lee Ban.<br />

43. '2,000 Years of Korean Costumes' at<br />

the Korea Exhibition Center.<br />

44. A show entitled 'Greece-Sports and<br />

Culture' was organized by the Greek<br />

Ministry of Culture to exhibit 150<br />

photographs and replicas of sculptures,<br />

reliefs, ceramics and murals from ancient<br />

Greece.<br />

45. The Seoul Olympic Exhibition Hall at<br />

the Korea Exhibition Center; five<br />

exhibitions including the World Children's<br />

Art Exhibition were staged here.<br />

46. A traditional Korean wedding<br />

ceremony.<br />

47. Some 300,000 stamps from 140<br />

countries featuring sports themes were on<br />

display at the Philatelic Exhibition.<br />
