through this great split. The analyses <strong>and</strong> recommendations <strong>of</strong><br />

a historiography that has played an important role throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

last two hundred years <strong>and</strong> was present at <strong>the</strong> birth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> modern<br />

civil nations, has now outgrown national frameworks <strong>and</strong> must target<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r dimension <strong>and</strong> interdisciplinary fields in international<br />

scholarship. Many internal questions <strong>and</strong> problems relating to national<br />

development, national frameworks <strong>and</strong> national society will<br />

continue to be a legitimate field <strong>of</strong> research for <strong>history</strong>. Its task is no<br />

longer <strong>the</strong> creation, reinforcement or validation <strong>of</strong> a nation, but<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> historical context <strong>of</strong> social movements that is<br />

independent <strong>of</strong> states.<br />
