historical reality <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> extent to which totalitarian regimes pervaded<br />

everyday life. Last but not least, <strong>the</strong> more recent analytical<br />

comparative approach strongly suggests that, despite <strong>the</strong> fundamental<br />

differences between <strong>the</strong> regimes <strong>and</strong> ideologies <strong>of</strong> Hitler<br />

<strong>and</strong> Stalin, under both <strong>the</strong> dilemmas <strong>of</strong> collaboration, alo<strong>of</strong>ness,<br />

<strong>and</strong> choice between nation <strong>and</strong> democracy had much in common<br />

for ordinary citizens.<br />
