from <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> Hartford, and thirty <strong>of</strong> Uncas's Indians under<br />

his son Joshua, who scouted with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r forces. The Nipmucks<br />

could not be found, and it was after<strong>war</strong>d learned from <strong>the</strong> Indian<br />

guide, George Memecho, captured by <strong>the</strong> Nipmucks <strong>in</strong> Wheeler's<br />

fight, that on <strong>the</strong>ir retreat from Brookfield on August 5th, Philip,<br />

with about forty <strong>war</strong>riors and many more women and children, had<br />

met <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> a swamp six miles beyond <strong>the</strong> battle ground, and by<br />

presents to <strong>the</strong>ir Sachems and o<strong>the</strong>rwise, had engaged <strong>the</strong>m fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong> his <strong>in</strong>terest ; and all probably hastened away to<strong>war</strong>ds Northfield<br />

and jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Pocomptucks, and <strong>the</strong>nce began to threaten <strong>the</strong> plan-<br />

tations on <strong>the</strong> Connecticut River. After several days diligent<br />

search<strong>in</strong>g, on August 16th, Capta<strong>in</strong> Lathrop's and Beers's companies,<br />

<strong>the</strong> latter re<strong>in</strong>forced by twenty-six men from Capt. Mosely,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Connecticut, Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield and Indian forces,<br />

marched to<strong>war</strong>ds Hadley and <strong>the</strong> neighbor<strong>in</strong>g towns, while Mosely<br />

went to<strong>war</strong>ds Lancaster and Chelmsford. Major Willard rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

for several weeks at <strong>the</strong> garrison. Mr. Hubbard and Capt. Wheeler<br />

make this statement, and fur<strong>the</strong>r relate that he soon after went<br />

up to Hadley on <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country. I th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong> visit to<br />

Hadley was after August 24th, as on that date I f<strong>in</strong>d a letter from<br />

Secretary Rawson to him, enclos<strong>in</strong>g one to Major Pynchon, and ad-<br />

vis<strong>in</strong>g him to ride up to Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield and visit Major Pynchon " for<br />

<strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> him and his people." The writer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Willard<br />

Memoir " states that he was <strong>in</strong> command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forces about<br />

Hadley for some time <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> Major Pynchon, but I have<br />

been unable to f<strong>in</strong>d any confirmation <strong>of</strong> this, unless it may be <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ference drawn from Hubbard, who states that when Major Willard<br />

" returned back to his own place to order <strong>the</strong> affairs <strong>of</strong> his own regiment,<br />

much need<strong>in</strong>g his Presence," he left " <strong>the</strong> Forces about Had-<br />

ley under <strong>the</strong> Command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Major <strong>of</strong> that Regiment." The letter<br />

above conta<strong>in</strong>ed directions about <strong>the</strong> disposal <strong>of</strong> his forces, &c,<br />

which would naturally take several weeks to accomplish, and although<br />

<strong>the</strong> precise date <strong>of</strong> Major Willard's return from Brookfield<br />

is not given, some <strong>in</strong>ference may be drawn from circumstances noted<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r on. Follow<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>the</strong> list <strong>of</strong> those credited with service<br />

under Major Willard, from August 23d to January 25th, 1675 :<br />
