CAPT. SAMUEL MOSELY AND HIS MEN.<br />

rilHE object <strong>of</strong> this series <strong>of</strong> articles is to ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

-L <strong>soldiers</strong> who served <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> above mentioned <strong>war</strong> under various<br />

commanders, and place <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> def<strong>in</strong>ite and permanent form. I<br />

believe, however, that many will be <strong>in</strong>terested to know someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> remarkable character whose name stands at<br />

<strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> this company <strong>of</strong> " Volunteers." I am greatly <strong>in</strong>debted<br />

to J. C. J. Brown, Esq., <strong>of</strong> Roxbury, who has made an exhaustive<br />

study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mosely genealogy, for many valuable papers and suggestions,<br />

besides cordial and appreciative cooperation.<br />

The family name. was Maudesley, <strong>of</strong> Lancashire, England. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> 1635 Henry Maudesley came from England to Massachusetts<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ship Hopesvell, Capt. Babb, master, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

ship came Isaac Heath (who settled at Roxbury), and fifty-three<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

Henry Maudesley was granted " about a quarter-acre <strong>of</strong> land " <strong>in</strong><br />

Dorchester " neere Goodman Munn<strong>in</strong>ge's," but lived at Bra<strong>in</strong>tree,<br />

and had children born <strong>the</strong>re—Mary, Sept. 21), 1638, and Samuel,<br />

June 14, 1641. Had 12 acres <strong>of</strong> land at Mt. W<strong>of</strong>laston granted<br />

him "for three heads," February 24, 1639-40, was <strong>of</strong> Artillery Co.<br />

1643, and freeman <strong>in</strong> 1646. In 1652 he lived <strong>in</strong> Boston, and had<br />

<strong>the</strong> lot on <strong>the</strong> corner <strong>of</strong> Union and Hanover Streets. (See " Notes<br />

on Book <strong>of</strong> Possessions," page 92.)<br />

The ancient Records seem to <strong>in</strong>dicate that nearly every <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

had his own way <strong>of</strong> spell<strong>in</strong>g 28 surnames, and <strong>the</strong> utmost care must<br />

be exercised to avoid frequent mistakes <strong>in</strong> collect<strong>in</strong>g data from dif-<br />

ferent sources. Thus Maudesley appears <strong>in</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest<br />

records as Modsley, Mosley, Mozley, Mosseley ; f<strong>in</strong>ally settl<strong>in</strong>gdown<br />

to Mosely. Samuel's signature, <strong>in</strong> every case known to me,<br />

is Mosley, while Add<strong>in</strong>gton, Rawson and o<strong>the</strong>r colonial <strong>of</strong>ficials,<br />

give it Mosely.<br />

Samuel Mosely married Ann Add<strong>in</strong>gton (born March 10, 1647,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first Isaac and sister <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hon. Isaac). They<br />

were married previous to May 30, 1665, for on that date Samuel<br />

Mosely and his wife Ann sign a deed to John Conney, convey<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> land <strong>in</strong> " W<strong>in</strong>dmill Field," which land Ann <strong>in</strong>herited from her<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r, who had died <strong>in</strong> 1653. Samuel is designated cooper, Con-<br />

88 An illustration <strong>of</strong> this is an oversight <strong>in</strong> my former article <strong>in</strong> regard to Jona. Adderton,<br />

whom I have found to be <strong>the</strong> same with Jona. Atlierton <strong>of</strong> Dorchester.<br />
