and greatly anoy <strong>the</strong> English & y* <strong>the</strong> confederacy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians is larger<br />

than yet wee see. Maj. Gen 11 Denisou was chosen for to goe General <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se forces, but he be<strong>in</strong>g taken ill Capt. Savage is sent Commander-<strong>in</strong>-chief,<br />

Capt Prentis command<strong>in</strong>g y e horse, Capt. Henchman and Capt Mosley,<br />

Capts <strong>of</strong> y e foot, Our eyes are unto y e Lord for his presence w th y em , &<br />

hope you will not be want<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> y r prares and watchfulness over <strong>the</strong> In-<br />

dians, and particularly we request you to use y r utmost authority to re-<br />

stra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Monheg<strong>in</strong>s & Pequods. E. R. Sec'y."<br />

By <strong>in</strong>quiry I found that this letter, dated June 28th, is preserved<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Connecticut Archives, and also two o<strong>the</strong>rs which are not <strong>in</strong> our<br />

own. By <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> Mr. Charles J. Hoadly, State Libra-<br />

rian <strong>of</strong> Connecticut, and member <strong>of</strong> our society, I have been fur-<br />

nished complete copies <strong>of</strong> both. One is <strong>of</strong> July 5th and <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r July 10th. I wish here to record my acknowledgments not<br />

only for <strong>the</strong> favor itself, but <strong>the</strong> careful copy<strong>in</strong>g by his own hand.<br />

The favor will be appreciated by all on read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> extracts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

letters given below, from Conn. Arch., War Docs., Vol. I. Doc. 5 :<br />

"Boston July 5 th 1675<br />

" Hon d Gent" By our former dat. <strong>the</strong> 3 d <strong>of</strong> this <strong>in</strong>stant wee gave you a<br />

briefe account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late outbreak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Plimouth Colony<br />

at Swanzie and p te adjac' and s<strong>in</strong>ce y l wee received <strong>the</strong> enclosed declar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> deplorable condition <strong>of</strong> those at Taunton <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same Colony wee<br />

have at <strong>the</strong>ir request accomodated <strong>the</strong>m with ammunition and men, ie. ab'<br />

80 troopers furnished with carb<strong>in</strong>es & small musketts ab 4 100 dragoones &<br />

ab 1 100 foote soldjers so that with <strong>the</strong>ir attendance for waggons &c. y e<br />

whole may be neere 400 men also two vessells well fitted with men provi-<br />

sions & ammunition we have sent ab* <strong>the</strong> Cape to accomodate all <strong>the</strong>ir necessityes<br />

so farr as wee could judge necessary," &c.<br />

The rema<strong>in</strong>der <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> letter discusses <strong>the</strong> affairs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United<br />

Colonies relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> arm<strong>in</strong>g and management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians not<br />

yet engaged with Philip, and is signed by Ed<strong>war</strong>d Rawson, Sec'y,<br />

on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Court, and is superscribed,<br />

" These to <strong>the</strong> Right Worshipf 11 John "W<strong>in</strong>throp Esq r Gov e n r <strong>of</strong> his<br />

Maj ty8 Colony at Connecticot p r 6ent, To be communicated to <strong>the</strong> Council<br />
