Capt. Thomas Brattle and his Men.<br />

Thomas Brattle was born about 1624. Was a merchant <strong>of</strong> good<br />

stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Boston <strong>in</strong> 1656 ; was <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Artillery Company <strong>in</strong> 1675.<br />

He was an enterpris<strong>in</strong>g land-purchaser, and bought large tracts on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Kennebec and <strong>the</strong> Merrimac, <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians. He<br />

owned valuable iron works at Concord, and was deputy from that<br />

town from 1678-1681 ; also from Lancaster, 1671-2. Was one <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> founders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old South Church, and <strong>in</strong> 1671 one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> com-<br />

missioners sent to treat with Philip at Taunton ; and <strong>in</strong> nearly all<br />

<strong>the</strong> relations <strong>of</strong> public life he appears as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most active and<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluential men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> colony. He married, probably <strong>in</strong> 1656, Elizabeth<br />

Tyng, daughter <strong>of</strong> Capt. William and Elizabeth (Coytemore)<br />

Tyng, whose tragic death, Nov. 9th, 1682, is recorded <strong>in</strong> Judge Sewall's<br />

Diary. Their children, born <strong>in</strong> Boston, were—Thomas, b. Sept.<br />

5, 1657, died same day ; Thomas, born June 20, 1658 ; Elizabeth,<br />

born Nov. 30th, 1660; William, born Nov. 22, 1662; Kathar<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

born Sept. 26, 1664; Bethiah, born Aug. 13, 1666; Mary, born<br />

Aug, 10, 1668 ; Ed<strong>war</strong>d, born Dec. 18, 1670. Thomas Brattle<br />

was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Cornet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Suffolk Troop, May 30th, 1670;<br />

Lieutenant, Oct. 13, 1675 ; Capta<strong>in</strong>, May 5, 1676. When <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong><br />

broke out Capt. Brattle was an immediate and important friend <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> colony. He loaned <strong>the</strong> colony two hundred pounds, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

first few months <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong> he is personally credited with cash, sup-<br />

plies and service to <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> fifteen hundred pounds upon <strong>the</strong><br />

treasurer's accounts.<br />
