Capt. George Corw<strong>in</strong>, or Curwen, came from England with wife<br />

Elizabeth (White, widow <strong>of</strong> John), and settled at Salem <strong>in</strong> 1G38.<br />

Their children were : Abigail, b. Aug. 1, 1637 ; John, b. July 25,<br />

1(338 ; Hannah, b. , 1642 ; Jonathan, b. Nov. 14, 1640.<br />

This wife Elizabeth died July 15, 1668, and he married 2d, July<br />

22, 1669, Mrs. Elizabeth Brooks, widow <strong>of</strong> Robert, <strong>of</strong> Plymouth,<br />

Penelope,<br />

and daughter <strong>of</strong> Gov. Ed<strong>war</strong>d W<strong>in</strong>slow, and by her had :<br />

b. June 7, 1670 ; Susannah, b. Oct. 10, 1672 ; George, b. 1674.<br />

Capt. Corw<strong>in</strong> was a deputy from Salem many times, was a man <strong>of</strong><br />

ability, <strong>in</strong>fluence and very popular. He was chosen to <strong>the</strong> command<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Troop raised at Salem and Lynn, and was commissioned<br />

October 8, 1662.<br />

In <strong>Philip's</strong> <strong>war</strong>, <strong>the</strong> only active service which I have found referred<br />

to him, appears <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Colonial Records, Vol. V. p. 90. At <strong>the</strong><br />

session <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Court May 5, 1676, Capt. Corw<strong>in</strong> was presented for<br />

<strong>the</strong> "evil example <strong>of</strong> his demeanor and carriage" to<strong>war</strong>ds Capt.<br />

Henchman, under whose command he was serv<strong>in</strong>g, with his troop,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 1676. He was reduced from his command with a<br />

severe reprimand, and f<strong>in</strong>ed one hundred pounds. The follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

September he was, upon <strong>the</strong> petition <strong>of</strong> his troopers, re<strong>in</strong>stated <strong>in</strong><br />

his command ; and <strong>in</strong> 1679-80 <strong>the</strong> court remitted his f<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

This <strong>of</strong>ficer was probably Ezekiel Gilman <strong>of</strong> Boston, 1675, who<br />

served under Capt Oliver as Sergt. <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Narraganset campaign ;<br />

was wounded at <strong>the</strong> fight ; was at Rhode Island January 6th, 1675-6.<br />

He was out aga<strong>in</strong> under Capt. Turner <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g, serv<strong>in</strong>g as Sergt.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Settlement he is styled "Capt."<br />
