<strong>in</strong>sertion here except <strong>the</strong> first part, " A JVarrative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Plant<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> Massachusetts Colony Anno 1628," &c. Besides <strong>the</strong>se<br />

tracts <strong>the</strong>re are many <strong>in</strong>timations <strong>of</strong> eccentricity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> character<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mr. Scottow. See "Memoir <strong>of</strong> Joshua Scottow," by Hon.<br />

Hamilton A. Hill, A.M. Also Sibley's "Harvard Graduates."<br />

The accounts <strong>of</strong> Capt. Scottow for disbursements dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong><br />

were still unsettled <strong>in</strong> 1685, when <strong>the</strong> amount claimed was over two<br />

hundred pounds ; <strong>the</strong> Court that year voted him a grant <strong>of</strong> fivehundred<br />

acres <strong>of</strong> land <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Mayne <strong>in</strong> any free place ;"<br />

and <strong>in</strong> 1686, some delay and trouble about this former grant hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

arisen, he was granted five hundred acres <strong>in</strong> addition <strong>in</strong> same place<br />

and under <strong>the</strong> same conditions.<br />

Capt. Scottow left numerous descendants, by his daughters ; <strong>in</strong><br />

his will probated March 3d, 1698, he mentions sixteen grand-<br />

children. Thomas Scottow, only surviv<strong>in</strong>g son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong>, after<br />

graduat<strong>in</strong>g at Harvard <strong>in</strong> 1677, seems to have associated himself<br />

with his fa<strong>the</strong>r ; he was Recorder <strong>of</strong> York County <strong>in</strong> 1686, and signs<br />

as Deputy Register, after that until 1688. In his fa<strong>the</strong>r's will he is<br />

bequea<strong>the</strong>d a double portion, which, if he dies without issue, shall<br />

go to his sister Elizabeth Savage. In Mr. Waters's " Genealogical<br />

Glean<strong>in</strong>gs," Part I., page 210, is found Thomas Scottow's will,<br />

which declares him to be "<strong>of</strong> Boston, Chirurgeon, now bound<br />

forth to sea <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ship Gerrard <strong>of</strong> London, Capt. William Dennis,<br />

commander, 14 November 1698," proved 4 September, 1699.<br />

Gives his sister Elizabeth Savage, <strong>of</strong> New England, all his<br />

real and personal estate <strong>in</strong> New England. To his "lov<strong>in</strong>g friend<br />

Margaret S<strong>of</strong>tley <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Parish <strong>of</strong> St. Paul, Shadwell, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> County<br />

<strong>of</strong> Middlesex, widow," all his goods and chattels and estate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> said<br />

ship, and all wages that may be due him for service on <strong>the</strong> said ship<br />

at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> his death, <strong>in</strong> satisfaction <strong>of</strong> what he shall owe her, at<br />

his death. He appo<strong>in</strong>ts her executrix.<br />
