deputy <strong>in</strong> 1676, and subsequently, except 1678, until 1681, when<br />

he was chosen Assistant, and rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> that <strong>of</strong>fice till <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Andros government <strong>in</strong> 1686. He was proscribed by Sir<br />

Edmund's <strong>of</strong>ficer, Randolph, as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> "factious." He was ar-<br />

rested on <strong>the</strong> general compla<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g " evil disposed and seditious,"<br />

October 19th, 1687, and refus<strong>in</strong>g to submit and give bonds<br />

for his good behavior, was committed to Boston jail, where he was<br />

kept many months till his age and <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>firmities forced a reluctant<br />

submission, and he was set at liberty, March 7, 1688. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> new charter <strong>of</strong> William and Mary <strong>in</strong> 1691, he was made one <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Council. He died May 15, 1696, leav<strong>in</strong>g an honored name<br />

which his posterity have cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> honor to <strong>the</strong> present day.
