The messengers made all possible speed for Dover, but were de-<br />

ta<strong>in</strong>ed at <strong>the</strong> Ferry at Newbury, and did not arrive until June 28th,<br />

<strong>the</strong> day after <strong>the</strong> blow had fallen. On <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 27th two<br />

squaws applied at each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> garrison houses for permission to sleep<br />

<strong>in</strong>side, as was <strong>of</strong>ten done, and two were admitted <strong>in</strong>to each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

o-arrisons, Walderne's, Heard's and Otis's, and were shown how to<br />

unfasten <strong>the</strong> gates if <strong>the</strong>y wished to go away dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> n ght.<br />

There was a report <strong>of</strong> a great number <strong>of</strong> Indians com<strong>in</strong>g to trade<br />

<strong>the</strong> Major's, asked him po<strong>in</strong>tedly, " Bro<strong>the</strong>r Waldron, what would<br />

you do if <strong>the</strong> strange Indians should come ?" " I could assemble a<br />

hundred men by lift<strong>in</strong>g up my f<strong>in</strong>ger," replied <strong>the</strong> Major <strong>in</strong> careless<br />

<strong>in</strong>difference. And thus all retired to rest ; no watch was placed and<br />

no precautions taken.<br />

After midnight <strong>the</strong> gates were opened by <strong>the</strong> squaws. The Indians<br />

wait<strong>in</strong>g outside rushed <strong>in</strong> and took possession without any<br />

alarm and rushed <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Major's rooms. Aroused from sleep, <strong>the</strong><br />

old man sprang up, seized his sword, and despite his eighty years,<br />

drove <strong>the</strong>m before him through several rooms, but turn<strong>in</strong>g to secure<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r arms, <strong>the</strong>y sprang upon him from beh<strong>in</strong>d and struck him down<br />

with a hatchet ; <strong>the</strong>y bound him <strong>in</strong>to his arm-chair and placed him<br />

upon a long table ; <strong>the</strong>y mocked him, and asked, "Who shall judge<br />

Indians now ? " They compelled <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Major to prepare<br />

<strong>the</strong>m supper, after which <strong>the</strong>y drew <strong>the</strong>ir knives, and slashed <strong>the</strong><br />

helpless old man across <strong>the</strong> breast, say<strong>in</strong>g "I cross out my ac-<br />

count." They <strong>the</strong>n cut <strong>of</strong>f his ears and nose and forced <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to<br />

his mouth, till at last, when fa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> blood he was<br />

about to fall, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m held his sword beneath him, upon which<br />
