Andrew Belcher, <strong>of</strong> Cambridge, a prom<strong>in</strong>ent merchant, with<br />

vessels operat<strong>in</strong>g between Boston and Connecticut ports, was active<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se affairs, but his accounts doubtless fall <strong>in</strong>to a later Ledger.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> State Archives, <strong>in</strong> some bills <strong>of</strong> Benjam<strong>in</strong> Gillam aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

<strong>the</strong> colony, I f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> item, Jan'y 10, 1675 :<br />

"To charges on men to cut out Andrew Belcher's SloojJ to go to Nar-<br />

ragansett, 14s."<br />

Mr. Church speaks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> Andrew Belcher as opportune<br />

<strong>in</strong> sav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> army ; Mr. Dudley says Goodale. Mr. Hubbard's<br />

reference to <strong>the</strong> vessels "frozen <strong>in</strong> at Cape Cod," caus<strong>in</strong>g distress,<br />

was, I th<strong>in</strong>k, to a later time.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> return <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> army to Mr. Smith's Garrison, <strong>the</strong> burial<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dead and removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir wounded to Rhode Island, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

spent several weeks parley<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> enemy, watch<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

recruit<strong>in</strong>g. Major Treat withdrew with his Connecticut forces,<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> wishes, it appears, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>ficers,<br />

and was later called to account for <strong>in</strong>subord<strong>in</strong>ation. Additional<br />

troops were sent down from Boston, and Massachusetts and<br />

Plymouth held <strong>the</strong> field for a month longer ; but <strong>the</strong>ir operations<br />

and <strong>the</strong> clos<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>of</strong> this w<strong>in</strong>ter campaign, and <strong>the</strong> new forces<br />

engaged, must fall <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> next chapter.<br />

Massachusetts after<strong>war</strong>ds redeemed <strong>the</strong> promise made to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>soldiers</strong> at Dedham Pla<strong>in</strong>, and granted to eight hundred and forty<br />

claimants, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those <strong>of</strong> Plymouth, <strong>the</strong> seven Narragansett<br />

townships. Connecticut to her volunteers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Narragansett <strong>war</strong>s<br />

granted <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Voluntown. (See List <strong>in</strong> Narragansett<br />

Historical Register, vol. i. p. 145, by Hon. Richard A. Wheeler.)<br />
