It is not known how much <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>the</strong> captive Indians, who<br />

escaped from Dover, exercised on <strong>the</strong> Kennebec Indians <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> renewal<br />

<strong>of</strong> hostilities, but it is certa<strong>in</strong> that "Simon" was at <strong>the</strong> head<br />

<strong>of</strong> those who struck <strong>the</strong> first blow at Casco (now Portland, Me.),<br />

<strong>in</strong> which attack <strong>the</strong> Brackets and o<strong>the</strong>rs to <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> thirty-<br />

four were killed or captured. And this party immediately after<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed those who had surprised Arrowsick and <strong>the</strong> settlements ad-<br />

* Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se made his own mark before his name, which was written by a clerk.<br />

The orig<strong>in</strong>al paper is preserved <strong>in</strong> Mass. Archives, Vol. 30. Of <strong>the</strong> Indians here sign<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

except Wannalancet and Squando, not much is known. Sampson is supposed to have<br />

been from <strong>the</strong> east as far as Kennebec. Mr. W ra Sagamore was probably a teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

" Pray<strong>in</strong>g Indians." Dony was <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ammoscogg<strong>in</strong>s ; Serogumba perhaps <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ossi-<br />

pees, and Warockomee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pequakets, though <strong>the</strong> assignment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two last is<br />

scarcely more than a guess. Sam 11 Numphow was a ruler <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wamesits, a Christian<br />

Indian.
