from <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y were so frightened <strong>the</strong>reat that <strong>the</strong>y fled, leav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir plunder. They were pursued by <strong>the</strong> English at this<br />

time and tracked far <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> woods by means <strong>of</strong> a light snow, but<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ally escaped <strong>in</strong>to a swamp. This latter service was probably<br />

under <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> Major Walderne, although we have no record<br />

<strong>of</strong> its details. For some time after this <strong>the</strong>y cont<strong>in</strong>ued to harass <strong>the</strong><br />

settlements, but near <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> November, when it is said that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had killed or captured one hundred and fifty people from <strong>the</strong> Kennebec<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Piscataqua, <strong>the</strong>y withdrew to <strong>the</strong>ir w<strong>in</strong>ter quarters,<br />

mostly at Ossipee and Pequaket. Gen. Denison designed, and had<br />

given orders to <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>in</strong> those parts to draw out all available men<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir command to pursue <strong>the</strong> enemy to <strong>the</strong>ir homes and <strong>the</strong>re at-<br />

tack and destroy <strong>the</strong>m. This design fell through on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

early and severe sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter and <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> proper snow-shoes<br />

<strong>in</strong> sufficient numbers. But <strong>the</strong> fierceness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> season, and <strong>the</strong> un-<br />

usual numbers huddled toge<strong>the</strong>r, with <strong>the</strong> probable neglect to secure<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir usual supply <strong>of</strong> food from harvests, hunt<strong>in</strong>g and fish<strong>in</strong>g, so<br />

p<strong>in</strong>ched <strong>the</strong>m by fam<strong>in</strong>e, that <strong>the</strong>y were forced to attempt a<br />

reconciliation, and came to Major Walderne and expressed sorrow<br />

for all <strong>the</strong> evil that had been done, and with him concluded a treaty*<br />

<strong>of</strong> peace, early <strong>in</strong> January, which rema<strong>in</strong>ed unbroken until August,<br />

1676.<br />

Before June, 1676, <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Indians, scattered and pursued<br />

from <strong>the</strong>ir tribes and homes, and fear<strong>in</strong>g exterm<strong>in</strong>ation, had hidden<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves amongst <strong>the</strong>se eastern Indians, and hoped to escape thus<br />

<strong>the</strong> vengeance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> English. In <strong>the</strong> mean time <strong>the</strong> eastern tribes<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves, through <strong>the</strong> mediation <strong>of</strong> Wannalancet and Major Walderne,<br />

were try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> various ways to atone for past crimes. June<br />

3, 1676, Wannalancet came <strong>in</strong> with several o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> his sachems<br />

and brought some English captives, and also <strong>the</strong> Indians who had<br />

been encased <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> kill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Thomas Kembal <strong>of</strong> Bradford, a month<br />

before, and <strong>the</strong> capture <strong>of</strong> his family. This Indian was called<br />

" Symon " <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> petition <strong>of</strong> Kembal's widow for redress, August 1,<br />

1676. Two o<strong>the</strong>rs were taken and delivered up at this time, "Andrew,"<br />

who was implicated with Symon, and Peter, engaged <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

crime ; <strong>the</strong>se were delivered by Wannalancet and his chiefs, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> captives, among <strong>the</strong>m Kembal's family, were <strong>of</strong>fered as a token<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir repentance and as an atonement for <strong>the</strong>ir crime. But our<br />

magistrates, a little doubtful that <strong>the</strong> price was sufficient, threw<br />

<strong>the</strong>se three Indians <strong>in</strong>to prison at Dover for <strong>the</strong> time, from which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y soon escaped, and go<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> east<strong>war</strong>d jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Kennebec<br />

and Ammoscogg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> renewed hostilities later on.<br />
