and had come hi<strong>the</strong>r under <strong>the</strong>ir protection and pledge. The Capta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

urged <strong>the</strong>ir commission, and Major Waldron urged his duty and<br />

pledge <strong>of</strong> hospitality ; but f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m determ<strong>in</strong>ed he compromised<br />

<strong>the</strong> matter by plann<strong>in</strong>g a stratagem by which some two hundred <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> hostile Indians were made prisoners, while Wanalanset and his<br />

Pennacooks, Ossipees and Pequakets were allowed to depart unharmed.<br />

The account <strong>of</strong> this transaction will properly fall under<br />

<strong>the</strong> chapter concern<strong>in</strong>g Major Waldron.<br />

Two days after this affair <strong>the</strong>se companies, toge<strong>the</strong>r with some <strong>of</strong><br />

Major Waldron's and Capt. Frost's men, marched on to <strong>the</strong> east<strong>war</strong>d<br />

as far probably as Falmouth, but, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g no enemy and all <strong>the</strong><br />

settlements deserted or destroyed, <strong>the</strong>y returned to Piscataqua, and<br />

were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se parts on October 3d, as mentioned <strong>in</strong> a letter <strong>of</strong> Gen.<br />

Denison to <strong>the</strong> Council. Capts. Sill, Hunt<strong>in</strong>g and Frost are said<br />

to be <strong>the</strong>re under command <strong>of</strong> Capt. Hathorne. It was <strong>the</strong>re, about<br />

this time, that some <strong>in</strong>subord<strong>in</strong>ation or o<strong>the</strong>r objectionable conduct<br />

occurred, which occasioned <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Court on<br />

October 17th, 1676.<br />

' Joshua<br />

Whereas Capt. Joseph Scyll hath heret<strong>of</strong>ore b<strong>in</strong>n imployed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

countrys service, as commander <strong>of</strong> a company, & that <strong>in</strong>formation is given<br />

that <strong>of</strong> late he hath carried himself <strong>of</strong>fencively <strong>in</strong> that place, this Court<br />

doth <strong>the</strong> r fore order, that <strong>the</strong> said Scyll be forthwith dischardged from that<br />

imploy, & some o<strong>the</strong>r meet person appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> his room.<br />

[Colony Records, Vol. V. p. 126.]<br />

I f<strong>in</strong>d no explanation <strong>of</strong> this <strong>in</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r place, and no subsequent<br />

action by <strong>the</strong> Court concern<strong>in</strong>g Capt. Sill, save that <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

answer to <strong>the</strong> petition below, which appears also, <strong>in</strong> Colony Records,<br />

Vol. V. p. 506. Mr. Hubbard's account <strong>in</strong>dicates that Capt. Sill<br />

still held his command, and went with Capt. Hathorne on <strong>the</strong> march<br />

<strong>in</strong> November, 1676, to Ossipee and Pequaket. Sometime before<br />

November 7, 1681, Capt. Sill removed to Lyme, Conn., where he<br />

was liv<strong>in</strong>g at that date. He died at Lyme, August 6, 1696. His<br />

son Thomas was a ship master, lived <strong>in</strong> Boston <strong>in</strong> 1699, and was<br />

probably <strong>the</strong> Capt. Sill who died <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> May, 1709.<br />
