Both were Inhabitants <strong>of</strong> Swansey <strong>in</strong> 1711. The Prov<strong>in</strong>ce law<br />

enacted that <strong>the</strong> eldest male heir <strong>of</strong> a soldier-grantee should have <strong>the</strong><br />

choice <strong>of</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> grant and pay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r heirs <strong>the</strong>ir pro-<br />

portional part <strong>of</strong> £10, which was <strong>the</strong> established valuation <strong>of</strong> a share.<br />

The various clues and <strong>in</strong>ferences above seem to po<strong>in</strong>t to <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g as a fair approximation to <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong><br />

Capt. William Turner and wife Frances.<br />

Thomas, 3 b. Sept. 18, 1082. Probably settled <strong>in</strong> Rochester, Mass., and<br />

had family <strong>the</strong>re ; perhaps died before 1786, or waived his right or<br />

sold it to William his bro<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>of</strong> Swansey.<br />

William, 3 m. Patience Hale, <strong>of</strong> Swansey, <strong>in</strong> 1711. Settled <strong>in</strong> Swansey,<br />

and was quite a large land-owner and a ship-builder. He succeeded to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Indian-War claim <strong>of</strong> his grandfa<strong>the</strong>r, as abovesaid. He was one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> non-resident proprietors who agreed to pay £23 each to carry<br />

for<strong>war</strong>d <strong>the</strong> settlement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Township. He was <strong>of</strong> Swansey as late<br />

as 1748, but later removed to Newport, R. I., where he died Oct. 4,<br />

1759, <strong>in</strong> his 77th year. His children, born <strong>in</strong> Swansey, were : Wil-<br />

liam, b. April 27, 1713, became a physician <strong>in</strong> New Jersey ; and his<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r children, born between 1714 and 1734, were: Lillis, Nathaniel,<br />

Patience, Caleb, and Hale.<br />

various parts <strong>of</strong> New England; and Dr. T. L. Turner, <strong>of</strong> Boston, has<br />

<strong>in</strong> preparation a genealogy <strong>of</strong> this whole branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Turner family,<br />

and has furnished much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material above, for my use <strong>in</strong> this article.<br />

Second Generation, L<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> William. 2<br />

William 8 Turner, son <strong>of</strong> Capt. William, a soldier at Marlborough Garrison<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> summer and fall <strong>of</strong> 1675, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Army with his fa<strong>the</strong>r from<br />

February 21, 1675-6, until <strong>the</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong>'s death, but was not <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

" Falls Fight." He served sometime after that, as <strong>the</strong> accounts <strong>of</strong> service<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicate. Married before 1679, and settled <strong>in</strong> Boston. Is <strong>in</strong> a<br />

list <strong>of</strong> handy-crafts <strong>in</strong> en later. In 1691 was among those who returned<br />

from <strong>the</strong> West Indies, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g an account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great earthquake <strong>the</strong>re;<br />

1695, chosen constable <strong>in</strong> Boston; 1698, tyth<strong>in</strong>guian ; 1699, clerk <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> market; 1701, licensed to sell w<strong>in</strong>e, etc.; 1708, his wife Hannah<br />

is licensed to sell w<strong>in</strong>e. His first wife was Ruth, by whom he had<br />

Joshua, b. Sept. 28, 1679, and aga<strong>in</strong>, Joshua, b. Aug, 20, 1687. He<br />

married Hannah Jackl<strong>in</strong>, Aug. 28, 1689, and had Mercy, b. Feb. 19,
