Second Letter <strong>of</strong> Lieut. John Rudduck to <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> honoured Governor & Council.<br />

Honored Sir After my humble Duty p r sented <strong>the</strong>se are to signify to<br />

this honored Councel that upon heariuge <strong>the</strong> Councell was Informed <strong>the</strong><br />

Constable had forbed <strong>the</strong> men that were quartered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> town and sent<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to me for quarter sum cam to me this morn<strong>in</strong>ge and threatened me<br />

if <strong>the</strong> men were taken away I should Answer it and many threaten<strong>in</strong>ge<br />

words and many were ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r about it I understand great<br />

Compla<strong>in</strong>ts are like to be made aga<strong>in</strong>st me to <strong>the</strong> Councell but I hope <strong>the</strong><br />

honoured Councell will have Charity for me till I can com to Answer for<br />

myself : <strong>in</strong> Regard to <strong>the</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Country. I cannot<br />

with convenience come down <strong>the</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mageseeu be<strong>in</strong>ge committed<br />

to me troubles me very much <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>of</strong>fended that I br<strong>in</strong>ge <strong>the</strong><br />

souldiers to meet<strong>in</strong>ge with me and say I must have soe many men to gard<br />

me it well known to many that it have bene my practise ever s<strong>in</strong>ce I<br />

have had a family I use to have <strong>the</strong>m to meet<strong>in</strong>ge with me I th<strong>in</strong>ke it my<br />

duty hav<strong>in</strong>g a garison <strong>of</strong> Souldiers to have <strong>the</strong>m to meet<strong>in</strong>g with mee<br />

allsoe I seet sum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> on half to gard <strong>the</strong> Town <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> forenoon and<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Afternoon anil <strong>the</strong>m that do not <strong>war</strong>d I have to meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with me : when we met toge<strong>the</strong>r to apoynt houses to be ffortified I would<br />

have had houses apoynted and men apoynted to <strong>the</strong>se houses but <strong>the</strong> In-<br />

sign would not yeald to that but would have <strong>the</strong> town caled toge<strong>the</strong>r to see<br />

what houses <strong>the</strong>y were will<strong>in</strong>ge to goe to and to fortify soe <strong>the</strong> designe was<br />

that my house should not be ffortified nor have any gard if danger be <strong>the</strong>y<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves will have <strong>the</strong> Inhabitants to gard <strong>the</strong>ire houses but if 1 have<br />

any I must have <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soulders and be at Charges to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>m myself<br />

I have propounded to <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong> Inhabitants be equally devided<br />

to <strong>the</strong> houses that are to be garded and <strong>the</strong> garison soulders divided likewise<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y would not yeld to that soe unless <strong>the</strong> honoured Councell be<br />

plesed to determ<strong>in</strong> this th<strong>in</strong>ge it will not be determ<strong>in</strong>ed sum have manedged<br />

<strong>the</strong>ire maters soe that I have Leetle or noe comand <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Inhabi-<br />

tants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> all is <strong>the</strong>re are that cannot swolow that pill
