Mr. Hubbard states <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> Mosely's men killed to be n<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

wounded ten. Whole number <strong>of</strong> English killed, above 80, and 150<br />

wounded that recovered. He puts <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> Indians killed at<br />

1000 <strong>war</strong>riors, and many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aged and women and children.<br />

The troops returned to Smith's Garrison that night, and cared for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir wounded ; and Church relates that Mr. Andrew Belcher 47 ar-<br />

rived that even<strong>in</strong>g at Wickford with a vessel laden with supplies,<br />

without which <strong>the</strong>re must have been great suffer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The troops rema<strong>in</strong>ed mostly <strong>in</strong>active dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter,<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Indians to terms <strong>of</strong> a permanent peace. There<br />

was some scout<strong>in</strong>g and frequent captures, but no general action. Jan.<br />

10, new forces were sent down from Boston, and <strong>the</strong> army was re-<br />

cruited to 1600 men, and on Jan. 27th began to move <strong>in</strong> pursuit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Indians, who had now renewed <strong>the</strong>ir depredations. At last, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

early part <strong>of</strong> February, hav<strong>in</strong>g pursued <strong>the</strong>m around as far as Marlborough<br />

and Brookfield, <strong>the</strong>y were forced to leave <strong>the</strong> pursuit for<br />

want <strong>of</strong> provisions and rest, and marched <strong>in</strong>to Boston. On <strong>the</strong> 5th<br />

<strong>of</strong> February <strong>the</strong> Major was ordered to dismiss his <strong>soldiers</strong> to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

several homes to await fur<strong>the</strong>r orders. On February 15th Capt.<br />

Mosely was ordered to march with his company to Sudbury, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>re to abide till fur<strong>the</strong>r orders.<br />
