already rescued and published <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Register, and also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ex-<br />

cellent book <strong>of</strong> E. W. Pierce, <strong>of</strong> Freetown, Mass., as well as a<br />

few un<strong>of</strong>ficial <strong>lists</strong> elsewhere. These mostly perta<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> Narra-<br />

gansett fight <strong>in</strong> December, 1675, and later ;<br />

whereas <strong>the</strong> Journal is<br />

from <strong>the</strong> commencement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> levy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> troops, June 24th. It is<br />

proposed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se papers to adhere strictly to <strong>the</strong> letter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> actual<br />

records ; extra matter, comments, &c, will be put <strong>in</strong> foot notes or <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> text apart from <strong>the</strong> <strong>lists</strong>. The names, however, <strong>of</strong> those who<br />

served under one <strong>of</strong>ficer or at one place, will be put consecutively under<br />

that name or place. Thus <strong>the</strong> credits under Capt. Daniel Henchman<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g a period <strong>of</strong> 15 months (<strong>the</strong> period covered by this Jour-<br />

nal), are all collected from date to date under his name. It will be<br />

remembered that <strong>the</strong> troops were not Regulars, and were only <strong>in</strong><br />

service so long as occasion required, and were called toge<strong>the</strong>r and<br />

disbanded at <strong>the</strong> pleasure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Court ; and so those who served<br />

under Capt. Henchman <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> summer campaign from June to Au-<br />

gust, 1675, were disbanded, and for <strong>the</strong> most part may be found,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Narragansett campaign, ei<strong>the</strong>r under new <strong>of</strong>ficers or at home<br />

about <strong>the</strong>ir various employments, while o<strong>the</strong>rs took <strong>the</strong>ir turn at <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>war</strong>. Many were engaged cont<strong>in</strong>ually under different <strong>of</strong>ficers and<br />

at <strong>the</strong> garrisons. The above remarks apply more to <strong>the</strong> foot com-<br />

panies ; <strong>the</strong> cavalry or " Troope " force was more regularly consti-<br />

tuted.<br />

A brief survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> affairs <strong>in</strong> Boston on June 24th,<br />

1675, when news <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attack <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians on Swansea, and Plymouth<br />

Colony's appeal for aid, arrived, may be <strong>in</strong> place here, espe-<br />

cially as <strong>in</strong> Massachusetts Records <strong>the</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

matter from <strong>the</strong> adjournment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Court on May 12 until it was<br />

called toge<strong>the</strong>r on July 19th. It is to be regretted that <strong>the</strong> records<br />

are lost, as we know many important meet<strong>in</strong>gs were held <strong>in</strong> this time.<br />

I <strong>in</strong>sert <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g fragments, preserved <strong>in</strong> Mass. Archives, vol.<br />

67, as testimony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> energy which <strong>the</strong> Court displayed <strong>in</strong> answer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> appeal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sister colony.
