without issue, Dec. 5, 1701; Judith, born March 26, 1G46;<br />

Jabez, born August 4, 1651; Elnathan, married about 1G81 Sarah<br />

Ta<strong>in</strong>ter ; Elizabeth; Richard, born Oct. 22, 1659; and Abigail,<br />

born April, 1662. From Hull's Journal I f<strong>in</strong>d that Eliezur<br />

served under Capt. Cutler <strong>in</strong> 1676. Elnathan was sergeant <strong>in</strong> his<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r's company <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> west, and after<strong>war</strong>ds served under Capt.<br />

Sill. Capt. Beers's age was probably about 63.<br />

It will be noted that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first campaign to Mount Hope, <strong>the</strong><br />

troops were drawn almost wholly from <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> Boston, Suffolk<br />

and Middlesex counties. In <strong>the</strong> latter part <strong>of</strong> July a levy had<br />

been made <strong>in</strong> Essex, and when on August 4th or 5th <strong>the</strong> news <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> disaster at Brookfield came to <strong>the</strong> Council, <strong>the</strong> company from<br />

Salem and vic<strong>in</strong>ity was summoned and sent up to <strong>the</strong> relief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

distressed garrison, under <strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> Capt. Lathrop, and ano-<br />

<strong>the</strong>r company from Watertown under Capt. Beers. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Capt. Wheeler, <strong>the</strong>se troops arrived at Brookfield on Saturday afternoon,<br />

August 7th, and it is probable that <strong>the</strong> troops sent up from<br />

Hartford and Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield arrived later, perhaps <strong>the</strong> same even<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

It is possible that it was on Monday, 9th, or Tuesday, that <strong>the</strong><br />

troops <strong>in</strong> force marched out to " Mem<strong>in</strong>imisset, where Capt.<br />

Hutch<strong>in</strong>son and Capt. Wheeler were assaulted," 89 and hav<strong>in</strong>g found<br />

no signs <strong>of</strong> Indians <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity, <strong>the</strong> company from Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield left<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs and marched northwaixl and around to Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield aga<strong>in</strong>,<br />

while <strong>the</strong> rest returned to Brookfield. The English were sorely puz-<br />

zled as to <strong>the</strong> whereabouts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians, and cont<strong>in</strong>ued scout<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

several days <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> Brookfield, probably as far as Hadley,<br />

know<strong>in</strong>g that Philip had now jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Nipmucks, and fear<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

<strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians were at no great distance. Gard<strong>in</strong>er's<br />

bill, given below, <strong>in</strong>dicates Lathrop's presence at Hadley, August<br />

12, but with<strong>in</strong> two days he was aga<strong>in</strong> at Brookfield. There, be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

recruited by <strong>the</strong> large force that came up with Capt. Mosely<br />

from Mendon, an advance <strong>in</strong> force was resolved upon, and on Aug.<br />

15th, Capts. Lathrop and Beers with <strong>the</strong>ir companies marched by<br />

way <strong>of</strong> Me<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>imisset to Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield. Capt. Mosely with his troops<br />

accompanied <strong>the</strong>m as far as <strong>the</strong> swamp, <strong>the</strong> scene <strong>of</strong> Wheeler's fight,<br />

where he separated from <strong>the</strong>m and marched away to<strong>war</strong>ds Chelms-<br />

ford and Lancaster, leav<strong>in</strong>g twenty-six <strong>of</strong> his men to recruit <strong>the</strong><br />

company <strong>of</strong> Capt. Beers (see ante, page 24). The troops under<br />

Capts. Lathrop and Beers, jo<strong>in</strong>ed at Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield by <strong>the</strong> forces under<br />

Capt. Watts, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> Connecticut Indians, spent several<br />

days explor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> country up along Swift River and <strong>the</strong> Connecti-<br />

89 Much doubt has existed as to <strong>the</strong> exact locality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wheeler fight, as we have noted<br />

previously; hut Dr. L. R. Paige lias <strong>in</strong>vestigated <strong>the</strong> matter fully, and feels sure that <strong>the</strong><br />

place was some five miles from <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong>Wickaboag Pond, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> swamp near <strong>the</strong> Indian<br />

rendezvous called Wenimisset, or Mem<strong>in</strong>imisset, which answers Capt. Wheeler's<br />

description <strong>in</strong> every particular. The o<strong>the</strong>r place which has been considered <strong>the</strong> scene <strong>of</strong><br />

attack, is sonic two and a half miles north<strong>war</strong>d from Wickaboag Pond, just over <strong>the</strong> town<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e between West Brookfield and New Bra<strong>in</strong>tree, <strong>in</strong> what was formerly known as " Ditch<br />

Meadow." It is hoped that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigations made quite recently concern<strong>in</strong>g this matter<br />

will be published.
