fidelity and skill <strong>of</strong> Joseph and Sampson <strong>in</strong> conduct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> retreat<br />

and avoid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ambush set by <strong>the</strong> enemy. But although this was<br />

known and vouched for by <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers, <strong>the</strong> popular feel<strong>in</strong>g was so<br />

bitter that <strong>the</strong>se two were threatened and <strong>in</strong>sulted by <strong>the</strong> <strong>soldiers</strong>, so<br />

that <strong>in</strong> utter discouragement <strong>the</strong>y fell away to <strong>the</strong> enemy at Haseanamesit,<br />

and Sampson was sla<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> fight by some friendly Indian<br />

scouts at Watchuset ; while Joseph hav<strong>in</strong>g been captured was sold<br />

<strong>in</strong>to slavery at Jamaica, by some Boston merchants, but after<strong>war</strong>ds<br />

by Mr. Eliot's importunity brought back aga<strong>in</strong>, though never re-<br />

leased.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, Aug. 30, 1675, <strong>the</strong> Governor and Council yield<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

popular prejudice, aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>ir own better judgment, decreed <strong>the</strong> disbandment<br />

<strong>of</strong> all Christian Indian companies <strong>in</strong> service ; and that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

be restra<strong>in</strong>ed from all usual commerce with <strong>the</strong> English and conf<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir five villages ; and no one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m to travel more than one<br />

mile from <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> such village except <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> company <strong>of</strong> English<br />

or on service. The five villages designated were Natick, Punquapog,<br />

Nashobah, Wamesit, and Hassanamesit. All Christian Indians<br />

were to repair to <strong>the</strong>se villages. If any shall be found break<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>se rules, <strong>the</strong> English are at liberty to shoot <strong>the</strong>m down as enemies<br />

or arrest <strong>the</strong>m. It was recommended by <strong>the</strong> Court that several <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> English should reside <strong>in</strong> each village, and this was earnestly<br />

but few<br />

desired by <strong>the</strong> Indians <strong>the</strong>mselves, for <strong>the</strong>ir own protection ;<br />

could be found who were will<strong>in</strong>g to withstand popular prejudice, as<br />

all who expressed sympathy or confidence to<strong>war</strong>ds <strong>the</strong>se Indians<br />

were at once denounced as fools or traitors. Maj. Gen. Gook<strong>in</strong>,<br />

and even <strong>the</strong> sa<strong>in</strong>tly Eliot were loaded with reproaches and threats,<br />

and <strong>in</strong>sulted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> streets because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir advocacy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rights <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Christian Indians. John Watson, senior, and Plenry Prentiss,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Cambridge, were with <strong>the</strong> Naticks for twelve weeks and gave<br />

certificate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir orderly, discreet and religious conduct. Although<br />

Watson had gone among <strong>the</strong>m bitterly opposed to <strong>the</strong>m, and<br />

shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> common op<strong>in</strong>ion aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>m, he was entirely<br />

converted by his experience, and declared it, though <strong>in</strong>curr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

much popular <strong>in</strong>dignation by that course. Chief among <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />

who led <strong>the</strong> hostile fury was Capt. Mosely <strong>in</strong> Boston, whose acts<br />

<strong>of</strong> persecution are set down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> chapters heret<strong>of</strong>ore devoted to<br />

him, among which <strong>the</strong> break<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village at Marlborough,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> imprisonment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> helpless and harmless Indians, was<br />

perhaps <strong>the</strong> most open outrage susta<strong>in</strong>ed by any ; and it is to <strong>the</strong><br />

credit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> magistrates that <strong>the</strong>y did not yield to <strong>the</strong> tremendous<br />

pressure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people's rage, which by every device possible kept<br />

<strong>the</strong>se poor creatures on trial for <strong>the</strong>ir lives and imprisoned through<br />

many weeks. Early <strong>in</strong> October <strong>the</strong> fever rose to its height, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Court was importuned with many petitions to remove all <strong>the</strong><br />

Christian Indians to one place and put <strong>the</strong>m under military guard.<br />

In spite <strong>of</strong> all pro<strong>of</strong> and testimony, and all <strong>the</strong> favor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Court,
