It is probable that <strong>the</strong> surrender <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fort at Blackpo<strong>in</strong>t was a<br />
great surprise to Capt. Scottow, as it was considered by all abso-<br />
lutely secure, and was at <strong>the</strong> time well supplied and amply garrisoned<br />
; doubtless <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> desertion was <strong>the</strong> long-suppressed<br />
discontent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people, and <strong>the</strong>ir panic at <strong>the</strong> approach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> large<br />
body <strong>of</strong> Indians which <strong>the</strong>ir fears magnified to an army. Capt.<br />
