and that Samuel Coleby, late <strong>of</strong> Almsbury, deceased, was with him.<br />

Some o<strong>the</strong>r papers <strong>of</strong> like tenor are preserved, and several fragments<br />

<strong>of</strong> evidence from town and church records, show<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong><br />

committee demanded pro<strong>of</strong>s before grant<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> claims. The residences<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>soldiers</strong> were given accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> best knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> committee, very <strong>of</strong>ten at loss for any <strong>in</strong>formation after <strong>the</strong><br />

lapse <strong>of</strong> sixty years. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>soldiers</strong>, after <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong>, had removed<br />

to <strong>in</strong>terior towns, and <strong>the</strong>ir descendants to different states,<br />

and sometimes <strong>the</strong> present residence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> claimant would be given<br />

as <strong>the</strong> supposed home <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soldier ancestor. Very many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>soldiers</strong> from <strong>the</strong> East were s<strong>in</strong>gle men, boys and apprentices, and<br />

when <strong>the</strong>se were killed <strong>the</strong>ir names were soon lost, unless some<br />

record was made. At Northampton a record <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> thirteen<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>soldiers</strong>, who had been <strong>in</strong> garrison <strong>the</strong>re, toge<strong>the</strong>r with<br />

that <strong>of</strong> Capt. Turner, is found upon <strong>the</strong> town books under date <strong>of</strong><br />

May 19, 1676, with <strong>the</strong> comment, "all sla<strong>in</strong> by Indians." The<br />

committee f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g this record, and not know<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>rwise, assigned<br />

Northampton, or "North," as <strong>the</strong>ir residence. It will be seen that<br />

one hundred and thirty-five names appear, while up to 1741 only<br />

n<strong>in</strong>ety-n<strong>in</strong>e claimants had been admitted. This may be expla<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> fact that so many <strong>of</strong> those engaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> affair were strang-<br />

ers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> colony, or mere boys, who left no legal claimants <strong>in</strong> this<br />

country. In o<strong>the</strong>r cases it would be difficult to prove relationship<br />

such as would entitle to a claim, especially when <strong>the</strong> soldier ances-<br />

tor had removed to a distant part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country.<br />

A List <strong>of</strong> y e <strong>Soldiers</strong> y* were <strong>in</strong> y e Fall Fight under Capt. W m Turner,<br />

approved <strong>of</strong>f by y e Committee <strong>of</strong> y e Gen. Court. (Dated June, 1736.)<br />
