Dec. 3d, 1G75, Capt. Prentice is appo<strong>in</strong>ted to command a troop<br />

<strong>of</strong> horse <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Narraganset campaign, jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> army at Dedham<br />

pla<strong>in</strong>, and marched with it, as related heret<strong>of</strong>ore, to Wickford, whence<br />

on <strong>the</strong> 16th he rode with his troop to Petaquanscut, and brought<br />

back <strong>the</strong> news <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> destruction <strong>of</strong> Bull's garrison. 50 On <strong>the</strong> 19th<br />

took part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> battle at <strong>the</strong> fort. All <strong>the</strong> mention <strong>of</strong> his presence<br />

that I have found is <strong>the</strong> pair <strong>of</strong> mittens that Church had borrowed<br />

<strong>of</strong> him, which were "wounded" <strong>in</strong> Church's pocket.<br />

But <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Archives, vol. fi8, page 104, 1 f<strong>in</strong>d that John Wyman,<br />

51 <strong>of</strong> his troop, was killed, and Nathan Richardson and Nathan<br />

Bel<strong>in</strong>s (Bill<strong>in</strong>gs) <strong>of</strong> Woburn, and Samuel Stone <strong>of</strong> Cambridge,<br />

were wounded.<br />

After this battle Capt. Prentice was active <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> subsequent scout<strong>in</strong>g<br />

raids <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g country. On December 27 he rode <strong>in</strong>to<br />

Pomham's country (now Warwick, R. I.) and destroyed many wigwams<br />

<strong>of</strong> an Indian village, but found no Indians. On January 21<br />

he was aga<strong>in</strong> scout<strong>in</strong>g, and met with a party <strong>of</strong> Indians, <strong>of</strong> whom<br />

two were captured and n<strong>in</strong>e killed. On <strong>the</strong> 27th <strong>the</strong> army started<br />

<strong>in</strong> pursuit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy, and after several days march<strong>in</strong>g returned<br />

to Boston, and <strong>the</strong> Massachusetts men were dismissed, for <strong>the</strong> time,<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir homes.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>the</strong> list <strong>of</strong> credits for this campaign. Appended<br />

is a list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same, as returned from <strong>the</strong> various local companies for<br />

this service, copied from Mass. Archives, vol. 68, show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> local-<br />

ities from which <strong>the</strong>y came.<br />
