<strong>the</strong> Court ; but <strong>the</strong> prejudices <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people were so strong and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

clamors so persistent, that Capt. Mosely, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity with<br />

his company <strong>of</strong> sixty men, was appealed to, and noth<strong>in</strong>g loth,<br />

under cover <strong>of</strong> his authority, gave <strong>the</strong> Indian fort up to <strong>the</strong> plunder<br />

and abuse <strong>of</strong> his soldiery. Fifteen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians were arrested and<br />

sent down to Boston, tied neck to neck like galley-slaves, and <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council was sorely taxed to keep <strong>the</strong> rage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

populace from execut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se poor creatures without trial ; but <strong>the</strong><br />

law did prevail, and after a long trial and imprisonment at Boston<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eleven (out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifteen) who were accused, all were fully<br />

acquitted except <strong>the</strong>ir first accuser, David, who was condemned for<br />

<strong>the</strong> suspicion as to <strong>the</strong> shepherd boy and also for his false accusa-<br />

tions, and also <strong>the</strong> Indian Joseph Spoonant, tried by ano<strong>the</strong>r jury ;<br />

<strong>the</strong>se two were condemned to be sold out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country as slaves.<br />

This persecution seems to have broken up <strong>the</strong> Indian settlement at<br />

Marlborough.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> meantime <strong>the</strong> garrison at Marlborough became a rendezvous<br />

for <strong>the</strong> troops go<strong>in</strong>g and com<strong>in</strong>g to and from <strong>the</strong> western towns, and<br />

while it was occupied by <strong>soldiers</strong> <strong>the</strong> people felt some degree <strong>of</strong><br />

security <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir homes ; but when <strong>the</strong> companies were drawn <strong>of</strong>f<br />

<strong>the</strong>y felt <strong>the</strong> danger <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir exposed condition, and after <strong>the</strong> disasters<br />

<strong>of</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong>s Beers and Lothrop, and <strong>the</strong> experiences <strong>of</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield,<br />

Deerfield, &c, <strong>the</strong>y resolved upon measures for better security.<br />

Upon October 1st <strong>the</strong>y were called toge<strong>the</strong>r, and took action as<br />

shown <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g paper preserved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Massachusetts Archives,<br />
