In accordance with his <strong>in</strong>structions Major Savage withdrew<br />

his troops about April 7th, leav<strong>in</strong>g one hundred and fifty-one men<br />

with Capt. Turner to garrison <strong>the</strong> towns, and with four companies<br />

under Capts. Mosely and Whipple, and Lieutenants Gillam and<br />

Ed<strong>war</strong>d Dr<strong>in</strong>ker, marched home<strong>war</strong>d. On arriv<strong>in</strong>g at Brookfield a<br />

council <strong>of</strong> <strong>war</strong> was held to consider <strong>the</strong> later orders from <strong>the</strong> Coun-<br />

cil, advis<strong>in</strong>g an attack upon <strong>the</strong> Indians at Mt. Wachuset, but it<br />

was decided not advisable. (The <strong>of</strong>ficers had learned by experience<br />

<strong>the</strong> futility <strong>of</strong> pursu<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> enemy with an army.) The expedition<br />

<strong>of</strong> Major Savage thus closed. 71 The troops were ei<strong>the</strong>r returned to<br />

Boston or engaged <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r service, and <strong>the</strong>re appear no fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

credits under his name. Accounts <strong>of</strong> Capts. Whipple and Turner<br />

are to be given hereafter, also <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>ficers mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

letters.<br />

71 In Mass. Archives, vol. 68, page 203, <strong>the</strong>re is an order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council to Gen. Denison<br />

to <strong>in</strong>spect <strong>the</strong> army returned under Major Savage, and discharg<strong>in</strong>g those unfitted for service<br />

to dispose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest as he shall judge best. The order was dated April 10, 1676.<br />

It seems that Mr. Samuel Nowell, chapla<strong>in</strong>, was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> council-<strong>of</strong>-<strong>war</strong>, and<br />

voted to march to Wachuset, but <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers Mosely, Whipple, Gillam and Dr<strong>in</strong>ker voted<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st it on <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>sufficient supplies and sickness among <strong>the</strong> troops. See Mass.<br />
