SOLDIERS IN KING PHILIP'S WAR.<br />

ryO <strong>the</strong> readers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Register it is probably well known that<br />

-*- but few published data exist from which it is possible to ga<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> those <strong>soldiers</strong> who served <strong>the</strong> Massachusetts Colony <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Indian <strong>war</strong> <strong>of</strong> 1675-8, known as "K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Philip's</strong> War." No part<br />

<strong>of</strong> our history seems to me more important, <strong>in</strong> no part have occurred<br />

events more thrill<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> no time has been displayed heroism <strong>of</strong> higher<br />

order, and yet <strong>the</strong>re is no part concern<strong>in</strong>g which so little is accurately<br />

known. It seems to me <strong>of</strong> great moment, <strong>the</strong>refore, that every-<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g, especially <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial and statistical nature, that can be found,<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>g upon <strong>the</strong> matter, should be ga<strong>the</strong>red and preserved.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g become acqua<strong>in</strong>ted some time s<strong>in</strong>ce with <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

Journal and Ledger <strong>of</strong> Mr. John Hull, Treasurer-at-<strong>war</strong>, and after-<br />

<strong>war</strong>ds Treasurer <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts Colony, I have conceived that a<br />

careful collation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> data <strong>the</strong>re<strong>in</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>ed may throw much<br />

valuable light upon this period. Under <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> "Military Ser-<br />

vice " are credited all who served <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong>, and <strong>the</strong>se items give<br />

not only <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>soldiers</strong> but <strong>the</strong>ir rank, <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers under<br />

whom <strong>the</strong>y served, and, <strong>in</strong> case <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers' names are omitted, <strong>the</strong><br />

garrisons or towns or places at which <strong>the</strong>ir service was rendered.<br />

A diligent comparison <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se items, with debits <strong>of</strong> cash, arms,<br />

cloth<strong>in</strong>g and assignments <strong>of</strong> pay, toge<strong>the</strong>r with dates and amounts,<br />

may, I trust, afford a fairly accurate account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> service,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>of</strong>ficers, <strong>the</strong> service at <strong>the</strong> different garrisons, and much<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation besides which will help o<strong>the</strong>r departments <strong>of</strong> our local<br />

history as well as this <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indian <strong>war</strong>.<br />

But that which I have particularly <strong>in</strong> hand is an attempt to re-<br />

store, so far as possible, <strong>the</strong> Rolls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Companies raised by <strong>the</strong><br />

Colony <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts. I am a<strong>war</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> few fragmentary <strong>lists</strong>
