Petition <strong>of</strong> Daniel Warren and Joseph Peirce.<br />

To Inform <strong>the</strong> Honoured Counsel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Service don at Sudbury by severall<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Inhabatance <strong>of</strong> Watertowne as our honoured Capta<strong>in</strong> Mason<br />

hath All ready <strong>in</strong>formed a part <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> petion: but we who wear<br />

<strong>the</strong>ar can moer largely <strong>in</strong>form this honoured Councel : that as it is said <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> petion that We drove two hundred Indians over <strong>the</strong> River ; wee followed<br />

<strong>the</strong> enimie over <strong>the</strong> river and joyned with som o<strong>the</strong>rs and went to<br />

see if wee could relieve Capta<strong>in</strong> Wadsworth upon <strong>the</strong> hill and <strong>the</strong>ar we had<br />

a fight with <strong>the</strong> Indians but <strong>the</strong>y be<strong>in</strong>ge soe many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m and we stayed<br />

soe long that we wear allmost <strong>in</strong>compassed by <strong>the</strong>m which cased us to retreat<br />

to Capta<strong>in</strong> Goodanous Garrison ; and <strong>the</strong>ir we stayed it be<strong>in</strong>g ner<br />

night till it was dark and <strong>the</strong>n we went to Mr Noices Mill to see if we<br />

could f<strong>in</strong>d any that were escaped to that place all though <strong>the</strong>ar wear noe<br />

persons dwell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re; but <strong>the</strong>ar we found :13: or :14: <strong>of</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong> Wadsworths<br />

men who wear escaped some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m wounded and brought <strong>the</strong>m<br />

to Sudbury towne ;<br />

On <strong>the</strong> next day <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g soe soon as it was light we went to<br />

looke for — Concord men who wear sla<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> River middow and <strong>the</strong>ar<br />

we went <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> colld water up to <strong>the</strong> knees where we found five and we<br />

brought <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> Conus to <strong>the</strong> Bridge fut and buried <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>ar; and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

we joyned ourselves to Capta<strong>in</strong> Hunton with as many o<strong>the</strong>rs as we could<br />

procuer and went over <strong>the</strong> River to look for Capta<strong>in</strong> Wadsworth and Capta<strong>in</strong><br />

Brattlebank and <strong>the</strong> <strong>soldiers</strong> that wear sla<strong>in</strong> ; and we ga<strong>the</strong>red <strong>the</strong>m<br />

up and Buried <strong>the</strong>m ; and <strong>the</strong>n it was agreed that we should goe up to<br />

Nobscut to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Carts from <strong>the</strong>nce <strong>in</strong>to Sudbury-Towue and soe returned<br />

Horn aga<strong>in</strong>e ; to what is above written we whos nanis are subscribed<br />

Our request is to <strong>the</strong> much Honoured Counsel that <strong>the</strong>y would be pleased<br />

to consider us <strong>in</strong> reference to our Request ; <strong>the</strong>ir be<strong>in</strong>g 2 troops <strong>of</strong> hors<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted to bury <strong>the</strong> dead as we wear <strong>in</strong>formed whos charg was spared<br />

and we as yet not allowed for what we did;<br />

Of o<strong>the</strong>r contemporary accounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fight and its consequences<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are several from em<strong>in</strong>ently reliable authorities. Treasurer<br />

John Hull wrote a letter on April 29th, 1676, concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sad<br />

state <strong>of</strong> affairs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> colony, giv<strong>in</strong>g details <strong>of</strong> successive casualties,<br />

and says : "On y e 21 st valiant Capta<strong>in</strong>s Wadsworth and Brocklebank<br />

w th about 50 valiant souldiers were sla<strong>in</strong> by y c Indians."<br />

The letters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> "Anonymous writer," published <strong>in</strong> London,<br />

which have been several times referred to above, give a very concise<br />

account, as follows : " April 20 th Capt. Wadsworth <strong>of</strong> Dorches-<br />

ter, be<strong>in</strong>g designed with an 100 men to repair to Marlborough to
