CREDITED WITH MILITARY SERVICE AT THE<br />

VARIOUS GARRISONS.<br />

<strong>the</strong> many garrisons occupied by <strong>the</strong> English dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong> importance varied accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> movements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> army.<br />

Marlborough, for <strong>in</strong>stance, was, dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong>, a<br />

rendezvous and general headquarters, and thus it was necessary to<br />

devote an entire chapter to that, and <strong>the</strong> operations <strong>the</strong>reabout.<br />

Mendon, Brookfield, Hadley, Northampton and several o<strong>the</strong>rs later,<br />

like Scarborough and Wells, became prom<strong>in</strong>ent by <strong>the</strong>ir position as<br />

frontiers, or as supply and recruit<strong>in</strong>g stations. It will be understood<br />

that <strong>the</strong>se items <strong>of</strong> credit occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Treasurer's book mixed with<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r credits under <strong>the</strong> various <strong>of</strong>ficers, &c, and not consecutively,<br />

as presented here. These garrisons are arranged alphabetically by<br />

names <strong>of</strong> places, for <strong>the</strong> convenience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reader ; and for <strong>the</strong> same<br />

reason, two <strong>lists</strong> already published <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se papers are repr<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

here.<br />
