numbers and distance, <strong>the</strong>y grew careless <strong>in</strong> send<strong>in</strong>g scouts or plac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

guards. They had no suspicion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g resolution <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> English to take <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fensive, nor any <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir pre-<br />

parations. A large body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians were ga<strong>the</strong>red near <strong>the</strong><br />

" Upper Falls" <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Connecticut, divided <strong>in</strong>to several parties, one<br />

<strong>of</strong> which was located on <strong>the</strong> high ground on <strong>the</strong> right bank at <strong>the</strong><br />

head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Full, ano<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> opposite bank, and a third at what<br />

is known now as " Smead's Island," about a mile below, and all<br />

were <strong>in</strong>tent upon <strong>the</strong>ir fish<strong>in</strong>g. Hear<strong>in</strong>g, however, that <strong>the</strong> English<br />

had turned some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir cattle out <strong>in</strong>to Hatfield meadows, a<br />

detachment was sent out upon May 12th, and succeeded <strong>in</strong> " stamped<strong>in</strong>g"<br />

about seventy head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se cattle, and driv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m safely<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> woods. This fresh outrage was carried out with impunity,<br />

and so enraged <strong>the</strong> English that <strong>the</strong>y urged to be led out aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir enemies at once, and when Reed, abovementioned, came <strong>in</strong> on<br />

May 15th, and disclosed <strong>the</strong> carelessness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians, it was resolved<br />

to wait no longer, but to ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> forces and strike a blow,<br />

and on that day Rev. John Russell writes a letter to <strong>the</strong> Council at<br />

Connecticut, <strong>in</strong>form<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir situation and giv<strong>in</strong>g general<br />

news. He speaks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir "visitation" by <strong>the</strong> epidemic distemper<br />

or malignant cold which had prevailed at Connecticut (and <strong>of</strong> which<br />

Mr. Ma<strong>the</strong>r wrote that he could not hear <strong>of</strong> a family <strong>in</strong> New England<br />

that wholly escaped) ; <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peaceful election at Boston on<br />

May 3d, and <strong>the</strong> return <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Rowlandson from captivity on that<br />

day, and letters from Philip, <strong>the</strong> "Old Queen " and o<strong>the</strong>r sachems,<br />

propos<strong>in</strong>g terms <strong>of</strong> peace. He gives <strong>the</strong> news from Europe, <strong>the</strong><br />

suffer<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> non-conformists, and <strong>of</strong> a great naval battle between<br />

<strong>the</strong> French and Dutch. Only an extract is here given, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

clos<strong>in</strong>g part which relates to <strong>the</strong> Indian <strong>war</strong>. The letter is dated<br />

Hadley, May 15th. The postscript is by <strong>the</strong> military <strong>of</strong>ficers.<br />

. . , . " This morn<strong>in</strong>g about sunrise came <strong>in</strong>to Hatfield one Thomas Reede<br />

a soldier who was taken captive when Deacon Goodman was sla<strong>in</strong>. He<br />

relates that <strong>the</strong>y are now plant<strong>in</strong>g at Deerfield and have been so <strong>the</strong>se<br />

three or four clays or more, saith fur<strong>the</strong>r that <strong>the</strong>y dwell at <strong>the</strong> Falls on<br />

both sides <strong>the</strong> river, are a considerable number, yet most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m old men<br />

and women. He cannot judge that <strong>the</strong>re are on both sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river<br />

above GO or 70 fight<strong>in</strong>g-men. They are secure and scornful, boast<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> great<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong>y have done and will do. There is Thomas Eames his daughter<br />

and child hardly used; one or two belong<strong>in</strong>g to Medfield and I th<strong>in</strong>k two<br />

children belong<strong>in</strong>g to Lancaster. The night before last <strong>the</strong>y came down<br />

to Hatfield upper meadow, and have driven away many horses and cattle<br />

to <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> fourscore and up<strong>war</strong>ds as <strong>the</strong>y judge. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se this<br />

man saw <strong>in</strong> Deerfield meadow, and found <strong>the</strong> bars put up to keep <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>in</strong>. This be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs, we th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong> Lord calls us to make<br />

some trial what may be done aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>m suddenly without fur<strong>the</strong>r delay<br />

and <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong> concurr<strong>in</strong>g resolution <strong>of</strong> men here seems to be to go out<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>m tomorrow night, so as to be with <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> Lord assist<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

before break <strong>of</strong> day. We need guidance and help from heaven. "We hum-<br />
