Landscape Character Areas (LCAs) are defined as discrete
geographical areas of a particular landscape character type and can
only occur at a single location.
6.146 These can be drawn at national, regional, district or even smaller local
scales. Within the study area only Joint Character Areas (JCAs) have
been mapped.
6.147 A large part of the study area north and west of the site is classified as
urban area and therefore not discussed in the published studies.
REGIONAL LANDSCAPE CHARACTER AREAS
6.148 At a national level, the (former) Countryside Commission and English
Nature have classified England into broadly homogenous landscape
character areas referred to as Joint Character Areas (JCAs). The JCAs
are described in eight volumes.
6.149 Within the 20km study area there are six JCAs, which are listed below and
shown in Figure 6.4.
30 Southern Magnesian Limestone;
37 Yorkshire Southern Pennine Fringe;
38 Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire Coalfield;
39 Humberhead Levels;
49 Sherwood; and
50 Derbyshire Peak Fringe and Lower Derwent.
6.150 The Penny Hill site falls within a single JCA, namely the „Nottinghamshire,
Derbyshire and Yorkshire Coalfields‟, (JCA 38).
6.151 The key characteristics of JCA 38 are summarised below although it
should be noted that the JCA covers a large geographical area and some
of these characteristics are not particularly evident within the site or its
immediate surroundings.

6.152 This JCA covers the site and much of the western half of the study area in
a vertical band.
