not part of the statement in v. 22b as such, but is<br />

intended to distinguish between the headship of Christ<br />

to the world and to the church.<br />

vv. 20ff contains these four christological statements<br />

is the first indication that we are justified in treating<br />

this pericope as independent of vv. 15-19.<br />

But<br />

we can go further.<br />

The assertion in v. 20b says<br />

essentially the same as that in v. 22a~<br />

similarly,<br />

although the assertion in v. 22b marks an advance in<br />

thought over that of v. 22a, it is nevertheless true<br />

that both assertions could easily have been presented<br />

in one short phrase such as
