If the author had used this<br />

latter citation it may well have been implied that<br />

he was referring to a subjection of all things merely<br />

as a subjection of enemies.<br />

But by introducing the<br />

tradition which associated Ps 8:6 with Ps 109:1b he<br />

was showing his preference for the concept portrayed<br />

by u~o~~<br />

which was absent from Ps 109:1b, and in<br />

so doing he has deliberately chosen to impart the<br />

concept of 'all things under his feet in reverential<br />

obedience' into his argument.<br />

A brief examination<br />

confirms this.<br />

The verb occurs 30 times<br />

in the NT. In only two of these occasions, Rom 8:7;<br />

Reb 12:9; is the idea of subjection primary. In<br />

the remainder, although the idea is included, it does<br />

not predominate.<br />

Of these remaining 28 references<br />

the word occurs some 14 times in codes of ethical<br />

instruction where the frequent addition of such<br />

phrases as I;y 6[3 XpI.O"totr (Eph 5: 31); c1>~ &'v1"\XE:V tv<br />

xupC~ (Col 3:18); OL&' ~~y XUpLOV (l Peter 2:13)<br />

to the concept of subjection implies that this subjection<br />

is conceived as an action which carries with<br />

it the notion of respect and, more significantly,<br />

these phrases impart a religious value into the concept<br />

of subjection.-<br />
