Moravian College • Preservation Master Plan Site Furnishings and Objects Site furnishings and objects within this character area do not date to the historic period. Nevertheless, it is important to have furnishings that are compatible with the historic character of adjacent character areas. In that vein, recommendations are to: • Relocate benches and trash containers from the center of the quad space to its borders in order to emphasize the open quality of the space. • Consider replacing all wooden benches with black metal benches that match existing trash containers and are more compatible with the historic character of the surrounding buildings (figure 7-6). • Consider replacing all pipe railings at building entrances with black metal railings that are more compatible with the historic character of the buildings (figure 7-7). • Maintain pedestrian-scale lighting within the Old Quad and assure that there is adequate lighting for safety and security at night. • Consider replacing bicycle racks with selection that is more compatible with the historic character of the adjacent buildings (figure 7-8). Relocate bicycle racks from planted areas to paved areas on the edges of the space. • Consolidate utilities along the base of Comenius Hall and screen with vegetation. Figure 7-6. Monocacy Quad Character Area The focus of treatment within this character area is on the preservation, stabilization, and maintenance of the historic character of the linear space contained by Hamilton Hall, Monocacy Hall, Zinzendorf Hall, Memorial Hall, and Reeves Library. General Retain surviving historic elements and character within this character area that provide a connection to important aspects of Moravian College’s heritage, particularly the older trees, the relatively level landform, linear views of the streetscape, the alignment of Monocacy Street, and the open character that has been an important quality of this space since the early twentieth century.
