Moravian College • Preservation Master Plan and some of the infill on the south side contains modern metal louver vents. Four of the secondlevel window areas on the north side are fully infilled with wooden louver vents of uncertain age. The wood louvers are deteriorated and need repainting. Roofi ng and Drainage The roof of the grandstand is hidden behind vinyl-capped parapets and not visible from the ground. Aerial views indicate it has a low-pitched side-gabled profile and is covered with built-up (EPDM) roofing, showing a number of patches. The roof drains to internal gutters leading to multiple galvanized-metal downspouts along the north, east, and west sides of the building. A gutter on the east side at the northeast corner drains directly to the sidewalk, where significant water damage to the foundation parging has occurred. Downspouts on the north side drain to concrete swales and then to the street. Another downspout descends into a basement areaway, where it enters an underground drain. There is evidence of at least one former downspout on the north wall that was removed after causing leak damage to the brick. Masonry The grandstand is built of concrete block faced with brick veneer, with concrete caps on the steps and façade ornamentation. The tops of the walls form flat-topped parapets with vinyl caps around the entire building. Flat full-height brick pilasters are located on the north and south façades and the north pilasters cover the corners and wrap around one bay to the east and west. These are ornamented with vertical cast concrete details resembling flatted paired brackets with central chevrons. A concrete band runs around the cornice of this area, and the cornice itself features several rows of corbelling. Projecting horizontal bands of vertical stretchers span the façade between pilasters at the second and third floor levels. The brickwork shows some signs of past damage and repairs of cracks, notably long vertical repointed areas on the northwest corner pilaster. Another pilaster on the north side shows vertical cracking. The repointed areas have whiter mortar and wider joints than the original. Infilled areas and the reconfigured side step walls have differentcolored brick from the original and appear to have been done in at least two separate campaigns. It is unclear whether this problem has been resolved. Some rising damp was noted on the east side adjacent to the entrance. The foundation on the east, north, and west sides is parged with cement. Several areas of the parging are stained, cracked, and failing, with severe damage and delamination near the northeast corner due to water from the downspout ponding against the foundation. Rising damp is evident in exposed foundation brick on the north side. Much of this can be attributed to leaks from gutters and water ponding at grade. Better drainage at grade is needed to shunt water away from the foundation. Water ponding against the wall is also a problem on the east steps and upper sidewalk, where again, better drainage solutions should be considered. Steel The grandstand has a steel roof supported by a steel truss system and interior steel columns. These are relatively new and appear to be in good condition. Other Features Figure 8-173. One next to the door commemorates the Bethlehem Steel Football Club (soccer).
