Moravian College • Preservation Master Plan entrance and stairwell, and created matching separate entrances at either end of the front, each with its own new stairwell. Restoration work in the 1960s and 1970s reversed this change and recreated the central paired entrances, but remaining work on the interior consisted largely of modernization. The primary three floors of the interior are oriented along a central corridor running lengthwise through each floor and opening to offices, classrooms, seminar rooms, and practice rooms. Interior The interior of the Single Brethren’s House has been modified repeatedly over time as its use changed. Investigations made during HABS documentation illustrate existing conditions as of 1968 as well as the probable original interior layout. Soundproofing is a priority, resulting in built-out, carpet-lined double walls and doors between the practice rooms and the The two attic floors are not in active use due to fire code restrictions, and retain much historic fabric. The lower attic has a central corridor opening to several large rooms, exposed plank floors, painted plaster walls and many nineteenth-century panel doors and moldings. Paint on the plaster is peeling off and failing throughout, and there are areas of damaged plaster as well. Antique furnishings and other items are kept in these rooms. The upper attic is mostly unfinished and has a central passageway and a steep, decaying flight of steps to the rooftop balcony. Brick chimney stacks exposed in the attic show evidence of water damage. Some spaces are crudely partitioned off the main corridor, and one small area is finished with planks on the walls and in the narrow dormers. This finish is probably original. The basement level has brick or dirt floors and a system of raised plank walkways for access throughout by visitors. It contains a number of original features, notably two barrel-vaulted storage cellars in the east half of the basement, and chimney stack bases with remains of the original kitchen ovens. The pre-1859 exterior wall of the Single Brethren’s House can be seen from the east end of the attic in Main Hall. Parged stucco mimicking ashlar stone blocks surrounded the original windows, which are now infilled with beadboard.
