Moravian College • Preservation Master Plan of the building there is some white staining where something is leaching from the mortar. Although not a major problem, testing and analysis might be necessary to determine the cause and source. Interior Memorial Hall’s interior has been almost fully modernized with an elevator, reconfiguration of the first-floor plan, and updated classrooms and hallway spaces. It has a central hall plan with one or two large classrooms on either side. A computer lab and media center occupy most of the first floor. A fireproof interior stairwell appears to be relatively modern, and the original stairway is not extant. Wood Most of the exterior trim on Memorial Hall is wood and includes the frame dormers, dentiled frieze board and cornice, the single story entrance porticos on the north and south facades, and windows with frames. There are places on the building’s exterior woodwork that require some minor carpentry work, specifically on some of the frame dormers and the column/pilaster bases on the south entrance portico. As always required with exposed wood surfaces, periodic maintenance includes proper removal of loose paint, sealing, priming and painting. Other Features Memorial Hall has original copper downspouts on its four corners. A small metal plaque on the north façade of the building commemorates its construction in memory of alumni who served in the military. Figure 8-282. Moravian College • Preservation Master Plan and original plastered wall surfaces, windows, and plain window moldings survive throughout the building. It appears that the original interior was relatively utilitarian in character to begin with, but if Memorial Hall’s interior once possessed any distinctive elements, none has survived. Water damage and stains from roof leaks were noted on the slanted wall in the southeast corner classroom on the third floor. The interior otherwise appears to be in good condition. There do not appear to be any major issues or concerns regarding the installation or upgrade of building systems in Memorial Hall. When systems such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC and fire suppression are upgraded in the future, the work should be conducted in a manner that is compatible and sensitive to the building’s architectural character and historic fabric both inside and out. Figure 8-283. Memorial Hall, large third floor west classroom, showing typical conditions (JMA 2009). Current Use Memorial Hall is currently used as classrooms, a computer lab, and a media center. Treatment It is recommended that the interior of Memorial Hall receive a Rehabilitation treatment, preserving remaining historic materials while allowing updates and new uses as needed. With one of the least modified exteriors on a historic building at Moravian and a fine example of the Georgian Colonial Revival architectural style, a Preservation treatment is recommended for the exterior. Maintenance issues noted at Memorial Hall include: • Grind out and re-point joints in areas with incompatible mortar. • Repair and reset loose roof slates. • Reglaze and repaint window sashes. • Reopen original gutters and reconnect to existing copper leader heads. • Conduct minor carpentry repairs. • Scrape, seal, prime and paint areas needing touch up. • Water stains in the southeast third-floor room indicate past or present roof leaks.
