Moravian College • Preservation Master Plan Signifi cance New Chapel is significant as the newest and most elaborate of three chapels in the Hurd Campus complex, with the other two being Hearst Hall (1848) and an unknown space within the Single Brethren’s House. Magnificent stained-glass memorial windows are among its most distinctive features. Integrity The overall exterior has a high level of historic integrity, with the exception of replaced windows on the lower floors on the east side. The interior of the building essentially retains its historic uses. It has low integrity on the first floor, a high level of integrity on the second floor, and a moderate level on the third floor. Condition Summary New Chapel/Peter Hall is a three-story red brick building with a double-height third floor level. It has a side-gabled slate roof and deep molded classical cornice with partial gable returns. It has symmetrical fenestration, primarily six-over-six double-hung windows with plain gabled wooden hoods. The brickwork is relatively plain on the lower floors but has recesses and corbelled arches and hoods on the third floor chapel level. Additions South Hall was appended to the south side of New Chapel/Peter Hall in 1873, connecting on the second and third floors only. New Chapel also had a ca. 1916 full-height exterior frame addition on the north side near the west corner, which housed the third-floor chapel organ and pipes. This was later removed, but its shadow is visible on the exterior. A shed-roofed square-shaped brick addition containing bathrooms or closets is located at the north side of the building where it adjoins Old Chapel/Hearst Hall. This has its own ground-floor entrance and window, and single windows on each floor on the north side. It is unclear how this addition was related to the frame organ addition. Doors, Fenestration and Exterior Moldings The primary exterior entrance to New Chapel is on the east side. The door is a modern flush metal door, but is surmounted by a ten-light original transom and sheltered by an elaborate bracketed hood with a hipped copper roof. A second door, which has a historic four-panel sash, is set into the north wall of the addition on the north side of the building. It is unclear whether this entrance is accessible from the interior. New Chapel’s windows have simple metal-clad gabled hoods and projecting metal-clad windowsills. Windows on the first and second Figure 8-64. Moravian College • Preservation Master Plan floors of the east side are replacement metal sash. The windows on the north and west sides are original six-over-six wood sash and fitted with exterior storm sash. All windows on the third floor are historic double-height windows, most with segmental arch tops. Those on the west, south, and north are pictorial stained glass in multiple large panels, with each portraying a different discipline: Science, Drama, Literature, Religion (the largest central west window), Music, and Education. The windows on the east are nine-over-nine clear glass. The central east window has a round-arched transom with colored glass. The historic wood windows are deteriorating and those on the east side of the third floor have failing glazing, paint, and lower rails. Several of the second-floor gable hoods are showing rot at the ends. The paired round-arched attic windows in the east gable were removed and infilled with a modern square attic vent. The building has a side-gabled slate roof, which is believed to be the original 1860s slate. Due to age, the roof has internal leaks. The north roof slope drains to a roof gutter. The south slope drains to a downspout leading to a concrete pad on the east side of South Hall, which is creating problems with erosion and rising damp at that location. Figure 8-68.
