Moravian College • Preservation Master Plan
compatible with the character of adjacent
buildings.
• Relocate vertically-oriented site furnishings,
such as trash receptacles and signage, to
entrances and exits and away from central
architectural features.
• Relocate or screen utility features such as the
gas meter in front of Rau-Hassler.
• Remove boulders that have been placed along
driveways or walks. They are not compatible
with the character of the campus and inhibit
mowing. If damage from vehicles is a problem,
add a raised curb to these areas.
• Develop a program to plan for and organize
small memorial markers. Identify memorial
plantings, such as trees or groves, with low,
ground-mounted markers that do not clutter
views or inhibit maintenance.
• Consider alternate system for blocking
vehicular access, such as pop-up or removable
bollards.
• Consolidate signage as much as possible.
Consider preventing parking with curbs rather
than signs.
Hillside Character Area
• Consider the character of this area when
planning for the rest of the campus. Carry
signage and furnishing systems into this area
in order to connect it conceptually with the
historic campus.
• When planning new buildings for this
area, utilize the same residential scale and
massing of the original buildings, along with
arrangements into groupings that encourage
social interaction.
Betty Prince Field Character Area
• Focus rehabilitation within this area on retaining
historic patterns of spatial organization and
land use.
• Consider the character of this area when
planning for the rest of the campus. Carry
signage and furnishing systems into this area
in order to connect it conceptually with the
historic campus.
• Consider improving access by identifying and
paving the gravel road that leads from the
Sports Quad down to this area.
• Protect large canopy trees that provide shade
in this area.
Campus Ring Character Area
General
Primary issues in this area have to do with campus
facility expansion and parking. The currently
on-going Facilities Master Plan for Moravian may
address many of these problems. The following
guidelines offer a preservation-oriented viewpoint.
Spatial Organization
When developing new facilities in this area,
maintain the building setbacks and spacing
patterns that characterize this late-nineteenth and
early-twentieth century neighborhood.
Buildings
• As a baseline, and in partnership with the
City of Bethlehem, survey and assess historic
buildings and landscapes in the neighborhood
surrounding Moravian College that merit
preservation.
• Retain all surviving historic elements and
maintain the historic character of this area
due to its role in providing a connection to
important aspects of the college’s heritage.
Avoid altering or removing the historic
buildings that survive within this area unless
there is a compelling reason for their removal.
Refer to Chapters 8 and 9 for more detailed
treatment recommendations.
• If facility expansion is desired in this area,
consider incorporating the spatial organization,
massing, and fenestration patterns found
in residential buildings in the surrounding
neighborhood.
Land Use
• Consolidate land uses within the campus
area, such as residential uses, offices, visitor
orientation areas, science, athletics, and
maintenance.
• Focus rehabilitation within this area on
maintaining important physical relationships
