sitting in it. Then <strong>the</strong>y put <strong>the</strong> canoe under <strong>the</strong><br />

eaves, <strong>and</strong> placed food before <strong>the</strong> little people<br />

more than <strong>the</strong>y could eat in a week.<br />

The next day two of <strong>the</strong> <strong>chief</strong> s sons went out<br />

hunting, <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong>y returned <strong>the</strong>y carried<br />

about <strong>the</strong>ir waists many caribou, as easily as a<br />

Micmac would carry a string of rabbits in his<br />

belt. And besides <strong>the</strong> caribou <strong>the</strong>re were otters<br />

<strong>and</strong> beavers hanging from <strong>the</strong> giants belts.<br />

The next day <strong>the</strong> giant <strong>chief</strong> said, &quot;We are<br />

to be attacked. We must be prepared for war.<br />

In three days a terrible Chenoo, with a heart of<br />

ice <strong>and</strong> stone, will <strong>com</strong>e from <strong>the</strong> north to de<br />

vour us. We must make ready to meet him.&quot;<br />

So two sons of <strong>the</strong> giant <strong>chief</strong>, with two o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

braves, started out early in <strong>the</strong> morning of <strong>the</strong><br />

third day to meet <strong>the</strong> cannibal giant Chenoo.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> time for <strong>the</strong> battle came, <strong>the</strong> <strong>chief</strong><br />

said to <strong>the</strong> little people, &quot;Stop up your ears,<br />

<strong>and</strong> bind your heads, <strong>and</strong> roll yourselves in
