him; so that many times Noojekesigunodasit<br />

had to go to bed hungry, for he dared not tell<br />

his fa<strong>the</strong>r. All <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r bro<strong>the</strong>rs were afraid<br />

of <strong>the</strong> eldest one, too, so <strong>the</strong>re was no one to<br />

help him.<br />

At last Noojekesigunodasit could bear <strong>the</strong><br />

ill-treatment no longer. So he went to his<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> said:<br />

&quot;I am going away. I cannot bear my<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r s cruelty any longer. I shall go far<br />

out into <strong>the</strong> world. So make for me a small<br />

bow <strong>and</strong> arrow <strong>and</strong> thirty pairs of moccasins.&quot;<br />

The mo<strong>the</strong>r told no one about <strong>the</strong> little boy s<br />

plan; for she was sorry for him, <strong>and</strong> she did<br />

not know how to shield him from <strong>the</strong> cruel<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r. She made <strong>the</strong> moccasins, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> bow<br />

<strong>and</strong> arrow, <strong>and</strong> gave <strong>the</strong>m to him with a heavy<br />

heart.<br />

Then Noojekesigunodasit made a bundle of<br />

<strong>the</strong> moccasins, <strong>and</strong> started early one morning,<br />

just after his fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rs had gone<br />

out hunting for <strong>the</strong> day. He stood in <strong>the</strong> door<br />

of <strong>the</strong> wigwam <strong>and</strong> looked about him. Every<br />

where <strong>the</strong>re were <strong>great</strong>, tall trees. He did not<br />

know any of <strong>the</strong> trails that led about <strong>the</strong><br />

forest, so he thought that it would be safest<br />

to make his own trail.<br />

Now this is what Noojekesigunodasit did.<br />

He stood <strong>the</strong>re in <strong>the</strong> doorway <strong>and</strong> shot <strong>the</strong><br />

arrow straight ahead. Then he quickly ran
