married, nor had a child, he knew nothing of<br />

<strong>the</strong> way of managing children. But, like all<br />

such people, he felt very certain that he knew<br />

all about it. So he turned to <strong>the</strong> baby with a<br />

sweet smile, <strong>and</strong> bade <strong>the</strong> little one <strong>com</strong>e to him.<br />

The Baby smiled back at <strong>the</strong> Great Chief,<br />

but he did not budge.<br />

Then <strong>the</strong> Master spoke sweetly, <strong>and</strong> made his<br />

voice like <strong>the</strong> sound of a summer bird, but it<br />

was of no avail, for Wasis sat still <strong>and</strong> sucked<br />

his maple sugar, <strong>and</strong> looked at <strong>Glooscap</strong> with<br />

untroubled eyes.<br />

And <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Master frowned as in <strong>great</strong><br />

anger, <strong>and</strong> spoke in an awful voice, <strong>and</strong> ordered<br />

Wasis to <strong>com</strong>e crawling to him at once. Baby<br />

burst out into wild tears <strong>and</strong> screams but for<br />

all that he did not move one inch.<br />

Then <strong>the</strong> Master, since he could do but one<br />

thing more, tried that. <strong>Glooscap</strong> had recourse<br />

to magic. He used his most dreadful spells;<br />

he sang <strong>the</strong> songs which raise <strong>the</strong> dead, <strong>and</strong><br />

scare <strong>the</strong> devils, <strong>and</strong> drive <strong>the</strong> witches to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

in <strong>the</strong> forest.<br />
