THE DESERTED CHILDEEN<br />

PAKT I<br />

IN <strong>the</strong> long, long ago, when Indians were as<br />

animals, <strong>and</strong> animals were as men, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

was a <strong>great</strong> famine <strong>and</strong> many Indians died.<br />

In a certain wigwam <strong>the</strong>re lived Pulowech, an<br />

Indian brave, with his wife <strong>and</strong> two step-chil<br />

dren, a boy <strong>and</strong> a girl.<br />

Every day Pulowech went into <strong>the</strong> forest, in<br />

search of food for his family. He could find<br />

so little that very often he went without food<br />

himself to give <strong>the</strong> children his share. And<br />

one day he did not find any game not even a<br />

single rabbit. What to do he did not know.<br />

At last he thought:<br />

&quot;I<br />

will give <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> flesh of my own body<br />

for <strong>the</strong>y must not die.&quot;<br />

to eat;<br />

Pulowech had a little magical power, so he<br />

took some of his own flesh, <strong>and</strong> pow-wowed<br />

(transformed) it into a rabbit, <strong>and</strong> carried it<br />

home. The children <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r were<br />

happy over <strong>the</strong>ir good meal, <strong>and</strong> Pulowech felt<br />

repaid for all <strong>the</strong> pain he had suffered.<br />

In a few days Pulowech did this again to give<br />
